Owner description: The story behind this unique architecture tells of its Latvian owner who was denied membership in the powerful Great Guild; to show his displeasure, he built two cat sculptures on his roof with their backsides facing the Guild and their tails straight up to finish the insult.

Two cats on the roof. That is what is special about this House in jugend style. Not brother If you are not in the area.

Next to the Big Guild, surprise to find a sports bar on the ground floor. Its most famous for its 2 black cats legend says that a disgruntles tradesman was not allowed into the Big Guild so he showed his displeasure by putting 2 metal cats on his roof opposite the Guild with their back ends facing the Guild ! later the cats were turned around to be in a more polite position!

Ever wonder why there are so many shops in Riga offering Black Cat fridge magnets, postcards, notebooks, ashtrays, and so on? You can see the symbol on the roof of the house here. Every tour guide in town will have their version of the story of the “disagreement” between the owner of the house and the Guild across the street. The house sits on a lovely square, from which you can get an excellent photograph of the cat silhouette against a legendary Baltic sunset.

We almost missed this attraction, because it does not stand out of the crowd. On the street level, it is just a nice house. The interesting part can be seen only if you decide to raise your eyes into the sky - you will notice a cat statue on the roof. A peculiar detail, but that's it.

It would be such a shame to walk past this building and not to look up to see the two cats poised aloft. The history of how the intention to place them is amusing and shows that human relations have always had episodes of sharp interactions even though they don't always get played out architecturally.
