Christmas lights all over, cold winterair, dark night - so cosy! A nice street for walking, no cars and just very nice. Lots of shops and places to eat.

Kaunas had long been the beleaguered cousin of the capital Vilnius, but proudly partisan and a centre of civil resistance, and so was perhaps a little neglected. I was quite shocked to see how dilapidated many of the buildings around the train station are for instance. However this long tree-filled promenade seems like another world with fancy shops and restaurants either side, bars, convenience stores, banks, supermarkets, restaurants, a cinema, casinos, nightclubs, museums, tourist information office (although for serious shopping try an out-of-town centre like Akropolis). St Michael's church dominates one end of the avenue. This really is a must-see that earns Kaunas its place as a significant and stylish European city.

Long pedestrian walkway in the middle of the city, starting in old town. Lots of shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes along the street.

A really long pedestrian street which runs from the Old Town to the Church of St. Michael the Archangel. You'll find pretty much everything you could need during your trip on it including shops, supermarkets, restaurants, banks, cinema, casinos, nightclubs, museums, tourist information office, places to stay and a post office!
