St. Michael the Archangel's Church or the Garrison Church (Lithuanian: Įgulos bažnyčia) is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Kaunas, closing the perspective of the Laisvės alėja, the main pedestrian street. It was built between 1891 and 1895 when Kaunas was part of the Russian empire, in Neo-Byzantine style largely for the use of the Russian Orthodox garrison of Kaunas Fortress. It symbolized less the presence of Orthodox Christians than the imperial authority of the Russian government. It was also believed that the church would reduce interdenominational frictions.
After the fall of the Kaunas Fortress during World War I the Germans cut down the church bells and transported them to Germany. The church stayed closed until 1919.
In the interwar period the cathedral became a Roman Catholic church of the Lithuanian garrison of Kaunas. There were voices urging the demolition of the church as it was labeled as without architectural value.
During the occupation by Soviet Union, it was used as an art gallery. Nowadays it serves as a Roman Catholic church. The other popular name of the church is Soboras.
As built, the cathedral reached 50 meters height. The main altar's stained glass showed God's entrance to heaven. Just inside the church and to the right is the entrance to the catacombs, which are accessible to the public.

The exterior is peeling badly and the interior, whilst very quiet and calm, is austere.
This is a military church and due to the historical background of the military in this region, it is understandable why it is like it is.

This church is located at end pedestrian area of Laisvės al. Basically between this one and old town is pedestrian area, full of shops, restaurants and cafes.
It was built 1895 for Russian garrison and is quite simple from inside compared to Kaunas Cathedral Basilica in Old Town. As it looks big from outside, it accommodates 2000 people inside, means big for me inside. To visit the church, it is free of charge to visit the church itself, under the church there are catacombs, where to visit might cost. It is worth to check opening hours.

Located at one end of the avenue you will find this big church commonly called “Soboras”. It is hardly ever open, but nicest from the outside anyway. Check in advance, to make sure you will be able to get a look inside. A nice photo background from the steps of the nearby art gallery on a good day.
