Owner description: The Russian chapel was built to honour the memory of those who died and to serve as a reminder of the follies of war. Russians prisoners built the neat little chapel between 1916 and 1917. The chapel has two small towers built in traditional Russian style. All around the chapel and along the roadside are the graves of Russian soldiers. In the First World War Vrsic was a strategic point providing the Austrian troops a more accessible router to the Soča Front. The supply of arms was crucial and the road to Vrsic had to be kept clear at all times, including during the winter months. Therefore, in winter, huge amounts of snow were cleared from the road by Russian prisoners of war under close supervision of the Austrian army. One day a huge avalanche buried the Russian prison camp, killing more than three hundred Russian prisoners and ten of their guards.

It's on a zig zag climb up the Julien Alps. Not a walk but a vehicle. It's 24 hairpin bends to top then 26 down. Well worth it. Lovely cafe at top and reasonable.

If you are going over the pass you must check out this little beauty. It is a very short walk from the parking area.

If you are driving over the mountains in this area, this church is worth a short stop. It is tiny and very cute. You do not go inside, just take photos of the outside and the surroundings.

If you are going from Kranjska gora via Trenta valley or you are just in Kranjska gora than go and visit a nice monument to Russian soldiers. They die when they are bulid a road from Kranjska gora to Vršič.

Built by the Russian soldiers who worked on building the road during the First World War. A poignant and peaceful place. Sit down and think.
