WOW! Wonderful church in a great setting and it is so beautiful inside. We were lucky to see inside, when we returned on the Sunday morning it was closed.

We very nearly missed the most beautiful piece of architecture in the whole of Prague. This beautiful cathedral was tucked away with little street appeal but once ensconced within the bowels of this Church, the real world of the tourist hustle and bustle tends to just dissipate. A very ornate and totally exquisite, awe inspiring church that totally took our breath away and brought tears to our eyes. Amazing, unassuming and hidden piece of art and architecture. Totally inspiring!

This is nice example of gentle and sensitive renovation. This great baroque church look now very fresh, bright, friendly and it most probably look just as it look when was freshly build up long rime ago....there are so many similar churches from 15-16 Centhury in Czech Republic, in fact in every village one could find nice example, living gallery or so, but many are preserved in old baroque style, highly deecorated, large painting, sometime quite dark....here at St. Nicholas they have spent some money with reconstruction and lighting is very nice, seats are new and organ sounds just wonderful, paintings are freshly touched and church lift up spirit of tired pilgrim a lot. Well done ! Make sure to come in, sit and calm your self and dont worry to have word with God too...

A large ornate cathedral next to the main square - well worth going in if you like churches and cathedrals.

This is in fact Ceske Budejovice Cathedral, and it's very big. You don't notice the size until you go in, because outside there's no square in front of it, and because it stands right next to the Black Tower - in the tower's shadow as it were.

The interior's lovely. Tall, airy and light, with a huge, dramatic painting of St Nicholas over the altar, a white and gold baroque pulpit (more the Austrian / South German sort of baroque than the sort one finds in Spain or Rome. - many people would call it rococo) and beautiful side chapels. One of them - the one with the font, I think - has solomonic (= twisted, curly) columns.

Outside, there's an impressive statue of Bishop Jan Valerián Jirsík at the front (he restored the church), and at the back the same striking, Central Asian-looking engaged buttresses as in St Dominic's.

It was closed when I went, but if you're lucky you may be able to look into the Chapel of Our Lord's Mortal Agony, which stands apart just behind the church.
