“Asked to leave the holiday home or alternatively tolerate central heating failure, shower failure and blocked drainage”
Reviewed 30 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

We booked the holiday cottage for a week during Easter. On arrival after a 6 hours long drive, we found that the water drainage in onsuite was blocked resulting in smelly, flooded onsuite. Perfect welcome of paying guests by the owners, Mrs Debbie & Mr Kimber!
Next morning, the shower stopped to function ( only cold water) and despite pleading the owners (who live next doors)to sort it ; this never got rectified in our 5 day stay. Instead they simply kept disturbing us at late hours with no resolution of the problems.
From day 2 onwards the heating system of the entire cottage ( neighbours) failed completely. We were then rudely told that the repair will not occur during our holiday stay .The temperatures dropped down to 2 degree Celsius during these nights. On repeatedly requesting; the owners bluntly and abusively asked us to leave the premises or alternatively stay back and put up with their non functioning cottage. We were astonished by their unpleasant hospitality and rudeness. As parents, for health and safety reasons; we felt it was not appropriate to subject our young family to this awful living conditions and indecent treatment by owners and hence decided to leave after paying the entire rent . The intrusive owners kept troubling us till our departure; this involved verbal abuse, humiliation ( said that we were intolerant to cold weather, non adjusting, and disgrace to our medical profession). They showed no respect to our privacy ( we were watched by the owners getting dressed and packing our suitcases to depart their cottage) . We paid the entire amount of the rent for the holiday requesting them to rightly utilise it for the betterment of the cottage so that it is habitable for humans hence forth. The basic necessities that any person can expect from any home ( let alone holiday home) is heating, water and hygienic drainage system. This cottage was devoid of all this. We are very disappointed to say that this holiday has left us with the worst memories ever. We would strongly dissuade anyone from booking the Specott cottages at Torrington ( Hayloft Cottage). Their website portrays a false image of the facilities which do not exist. Please take this cottage off the holiday rental market and refund our payment with apology.

Management Response

I had not intended to reply to this review, but having received professional advice, will now do so because of the damaging effect this review may have.
This booking was not made with Holiday Lettings and was only booked as a late booking,by telephone, after mid=day on the day of arrival.
I do not deny that there were problems with the shower or the central heating, but it has been grossly exaggerated and some comments are totally untrue, both were dealt with as soon as it was possible. The shower showed no sign of flooding but we cleaned it throughly anyway and it was cold because the electric supply switch was switched off, although we had informed the couple that they needed to keep it on.
Unfortunately, the central heating boiler, which supplied Hayloft and Parlour did pack up on the Wednesday. I was at work until 9.30p.m. which was the first time I heard about it and went straight down to see them.
The cottage was not cold as the wood burner was going, and the men folk were walking around in T shirts, it was just the lady who had a coat and scarf on. I did offer oil filled radiators as I did to the family next door who had very young babies, as a back to the woodburner. The response to everything I suggested was very negative. I felt there was nothing I could do which would be acceptable and because no payment had been forth coming for the weeks holiday, I asked the family to leave the following morning.
The plumber came by 9.am the next morning and he confirmed that there was nothing wrong with the shower but that the boiler did need new parts which he would not be able to get immediately.
We do listen to what our guests have to say and do everything we can to make sure our guests have everything they need to make their stay enjoyable.

“Absolutely perfect...very peaceful and chilled!”
Reviewed 17 January 2014 for a stay in December 2013

We are already planning on coming back... It was a fantastic place to stay. We never had to ask for anything, as all was thought about. We had a brilliant week and enjoyed the facilities, the scenery and the walks. Lots of lovely little villages nearby to visit also! Thank you for a perfect week away!
