Wow, where to start! After searching for and visiting many wedding venues in Durban & Cape Town, we decided on Hartford House. This venue offered a personal touch and an 'old world' charm we wanted for our special day. We chose a spring wedding because of the beautiful gardens and cherry blossoms and wanted to make the most of them in our wedding photos.
We chose a family-style dinner on the Friday night before the wedding as an arrival and meet-and-greet event for our guests. The dinner was outstanding, everything was served on time, was warm and got the tastebuds working and gave us a sneak peak as to the quality we could expect at our wedding. It was a typical chilly Midlands evening and the heaters and fires were going and red wine flowing!A perfect Friday night..
We had visited Hartford House twice before to do a venue inspection and then to plan the finer details for the wedding like decor, menu etc. The quality of food and service has remained consistent throughout all our visits and Duncan, Kevin and the staff have made us feel welcome and looked after us on all our stays.
Our wedding guest list included many well-traveled friends and family who loved the food, quiet surroundings and their time at this Midlands gem!
Our wedding day was everything we hoped it would be. Duncan was a pleasure to deal with throughout the planning process and any minor issues were resolved in good time and made for a truly unforgettable day. The staff assisted with our venue setup and the order of events went smoothly and exactly as planned. The talented Chef Tijn and his team did an outstanding job on the food!
We will definitely be back! I have no complaints, possibly to just mention that maintenance is needed in a few areas and more visible signage to the hotel, chapel and wedding venue.
Thank you for making our wedding weekend as magical as it was.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Peering through one teakwood door at Hartford House, you face an historic world. Opening another, the distant sounds of an ancient people at work lilt across the silent landscape, a country of great space, spectacular mountains and big skies. This place commands a headland between the world of traditional cultures and the splendid style of the 1800s. It is the resolution of all South African safaris. The journey’s exclamation point, a retreat from the hubbub where you make sense of a fast life and its senseless details. This is where we learn to redress ourselves on a first name basis. There are too many luxury hotels these days offering the same: a chocolate on the pillow, canned romance, and cuisine called “haut” because it’s spelled in French. Hartford stands apart for its integrity; its architecture and its views, its sounds, its scents and its colours; its racehorses and its people are all exhilarating surprises, unique to this Zululand, this culture, to Africa. Yes, you come here to be pampered, but at Hartford luxury is the journey, not the destination. The truth is, Hartford just happened. A home, and a grand one at that, which grew into a hotel. A community looks to it as its watering hole, its nexus of entertainment, its fountain of gossip. In so many ways, it’s gained and regained inspiration from the cultures it celebrates. It is life’s exception, a place at the same time comfortable beyond dreams, yet innocent of pretence. Moulded by its people, their vibrancy and their enterprise. And driven by a wish to be remembered. ... more less
