The Currie lighthouse was designed and prefabricated in England, then shipped to and assembled in Tasmania in 1879. The light was turned on in 1880. It was the second lighthouse to be built on King Island after the Cape Wickham lighthouse.

It is 21 metres tall and inside there is a spiral staircase with approximately 90 stairs.

The lighthouse was turned off in 1989 though after much lobbying was reignited in 1995.

We were unable to go inside whilst we were there as it appeared that the lighthouse was being refurbished and repainted.

We were lucky enough to be invited to walk to the top of the lighthouse to enjoy the extensive view over Currie Harbour.
The stairs are narrow and winding. Not for the infirm or claustrophobic.
