We've been coming to the Australian Rainbow Trout Farm in Macclesfield for over 12 years and never tire of it. The surroundings - the bush, the kangaroos, the chickens and the birds that inhabit the trees surrounding the farm - are beautiful and tranquil.
The farm has three ponds - one containing trout 500g or less, the other over 500g and a salmon pond (trout is about $17 a kilo, salmon about $30). There is also a trout stocked lake; the fish in this lake take longer to catch. The farm supplies the rods (or you can bring your own) and bait. It takes about 5 minutes to catch a fish and you must keep what you catch. There are bbqs scattered around the farm so bring your picnic set and cook your fish once you catch it (or just take it home!) The kids can play on the playground or chase the chickens which are sometimes let loose. There is also an old farm dog that wanders around sometimes looking for scraps. He is large but totally harmless. The farm charges a minimal entrance fee - $6 for adults, $4.50 for children at time of writing.
The farm is perfect for all ages and beautiful day out with the family. The drive through the Dandenongs and the animals at the park make it a perfect Victorian tourist attraction.
