“Excellent property, great trip, some things to consider”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2012

Just returned from a family trip to this beautiful property. The hotel grounds are lovely, the beach was perfect for our kids (calm, shallow entry), and the service was what we would expect of the Ritz Carlton brand. All the food we had on site was very good - especially at BLT. We also ventured off property and found some excellent food (you must to to La Playita) and the locals wonderful. Our experience with everything that the hotel and staff can control was top notch. However, there are a couple things out of the control of this hotel that you need to consider before coming here.

First, the area surrounding the hotel is a bit of a concrete jungle. The Ritz itself is an oasis, but when you leave the property to walk to dinner it's kind of grungy. Not scary or unsafe, but not exactly a tropical oasis.

Second, there were tons of families staying here. If you are looking for more of an adult experience, just check the calendar and make sure you aren't coming in March or April. If you are looking for a family friendly place, then you've found it. BLT even offered portable dvd players for the kids, if you are into that sort of thing (we aren't). Our kids had an absolute ball.

Third, I was not a huge fan of the clientele. I lot count of the Yankees and Giants gear and it felt like a "Real Housewives of New (fill in blank)" convention. Living, breathing stereotypes everywhere you turned. Loud, obnoxious and self-entitled. Reserving 10 pool chairs at 7 am for 5 people to use and not ever actually using them? Totally within the bounds of acceptable behavior in certain parts of the country. I was baffled. If these are your peeps, then you'll feel right at home. Otherwise, you'll be biting your tongue . . . . .a lot. Do what we did and go to the beach where the sound of the waves and the yummy cocktails are the perfect antidote. I know that was harsh, but after a week, the behavior was a bit much no matter how hard I tried to ignore it.

Like I said, the Ritz can't control these things, but it's helpful as a guest to be aware. As much as I enjoyed our stay, I personally would not return due to my first and third observations.

Tip: do yourself a favor and make the beach your home base. There are plenty of good spots, the ocean is perfect background noise, and you avoid the annoying lounge chair commandos. It's infinitely more relaxing than the pool area. It's still a quick walk to the pool for a dip if you choose.

Spent four nights at the Ritz Carlton, using Marriott Reward Points. Never left the property. We specifically took the trip to relax and unwind and that's what we did. We are from New Jersey and immediately realized that the clientele were from NYC, Phila. and NJ. The 2 restaurants are NYC based - Il Mulino and BLT Steak (both outstanding). Weather for half our stay was cloudy, so we went to the casino on the property. The other half of our stay was sunny and we spent all day at the pool and/or beach. Our trip was Thurs.-Monday. Saturday at the pool was packed---not a single lounge chair unoccupied. Clientele was made up of young families with babies and small children and young couples travelling in a group. The remainder were older couples in their 50's-60's, like us. If you want to see the sights, it requires either a cab or car rental. The only drawback to the location---you are very close to the end of the airport runway. You do hear jet engine noise at the pool throughout the day.

Room Tip: We paid an upgrade to stay in an ocean view room. We were on floor 7. Believe me; you want an ocea...

An excellent hotel with very good facilities, the beach is outstanding. The only negative is that the hotel is excluded from the main city so you need a taxi to get everywhere. Visited January 2009.

The Ritz Carlton San Juan has the "Ritz" way down! Every staff member smiles and says hello. The property is lovely. Great pool area but never sat there. The beach is not one of the most gorgeous, but its fine. Comfy lounges and great drink and lunch service by the ocean can make a person's day! The guys working the beach are great. Always enough lounges...and you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to get one.

Breakfast room is a bit harried and disorganized but if you are in a vacation frame of mind, you can deal with it. I kept telling myself to chill. Food is good. French fries are killer. Prices are "Ritz" steep. We had an ocean front room with a balcony which had been redone since our last visit. It was lovely. Beds are great with loads of pillows and sparkling white sheets and thick towels. Great little single serve coffee maker in the room. Better than the coffee in the restaurants. Had dinner at BLT - it was good. Il Mulino is a shadow of the one in NYC - the only thing it shares is the name. This is a city resort - so you have the benefit of great dining in Old San Juan and Condado being nearby.

We spent four nights at the Ritz and had a great experience. The facilities are clean, comfortable and pleasant. The staff were, like Ritz staff everywhere, unfailingly friendly and always willing to help. Whether it be by the pool, in the lobby, on the beach, or on the floors. The beach itself is lovely, with lots of chairs and towels. Not crowded. BUT, if you really want isolated quiet beach experience, you can walk 1/4 mile down the beach and there is noone. Empty white sand beach for a mile. The waves are mellow, but good for little kids. Some folks out there surfing, but just beginners on baby waves. The pool is nice. Good temperature. Bars and poolside food/drink service were good. The hot tub is nice. We called ahead to see if there were kids activities by the beach and pool and were told there were kayak rentals and things like that. Not so much. If you are looking for lots of "activities" for the kids, this is not the place. Of course, the pool and beach are great. There is a Walgreens next door for boogie boards and beach/sand toys. We found the pricing on site to be pricey, but that was expected. The hotel restaurants (Il Molino, BLT and general food service) were costly. The drinks, too, were pricey. Just know that going in. If you can get on the Club Lounge floor (9th floor), that's the real key. There is breakfast/lunch/snack/dinner/dessert service nonstop from 7 am through 10 pm. Excellent options and free! That was the "steal" of the trip, and worth over $100 per day, easy. Finally, of course the beach views are awesome. But, if you get a non-beach view -- overlooking the airport -- the noise is NOT a factor. We worried, but the triple-layered windows are, indeed, soundproof.

Room Tip: 9th Floor hasd the Club Lounge
