This place has so much potential, but have to say we were really disappointed... We visited twice in August whilst on holiday in North Wales.
The first occasion, my partner had a beginners lesson (although we both surf regularly, she took a lesson to learn the technique and etiquette on the lagoon) - I stayed dry to take some photos...
The lesson was 2 hours long, an hour of this was in the "classroom".
My partner was less than impressed with the lesson in comparison to other lessons we've taken in the UK and abroad.
The instructor, Toby, was poor. The lesson spent only 40 mins on the water, some of which was wasted with the instructor waxing the brand new boards and surfing the wave himself rather than providing feedback to the group (all of whom were competent surfers who clearly took a lesson to learn about the venue on their first visit)...
Unsure as to how we felt about the whole thing (and desperately wanting to like it!!) we returned for a "free surf" session later in the week. Unfortunately the experience was much the same...
Lack-lustre staff, smelly wetsuits (bearing in mind they're only a week old!!!!) general chaos in the running of the venue was evident...
The surf experience itself was poor due to the strong winds blowing down the lagoon.
A few surfers came out of the water early and requested to swap to the other end of the lagoon as the wind was a nightmare!!
Adding salt to the wound, two foul-mouthed teenagers clowning around at the beginner end of the lagoon kept drifting back into the middle of the wave and getting in the way of other advanced and intermediate riders trying to surf - this was raised with the lifeguard supervising our session, who did nothing to address the situation.
On both occasions we visited, there were huge sheets of plastic blowing from the building site into the lagoon, which had to be retrieved by surfers... There were also thousands of little polystyrene balls floating in the water which had obviously come from packaging of materials for the site.
The staff are friendly, but really clueless, they clearly have received very little training in their roles, which makes the whole running of the centre look shambolic, from bar staff who don't know how to pour a pint, school-dinner like food and the complete lack of surf etiquette or indeed common sense out on the lagoon.
The wave itself is surely an amazing feat of engineering, but I remain to be convinced that the murky brown water and underwhelming wave even comes close to a 'real' surf in Cornwall, Devon, or the Gower - which are our local spots... Although, I guess if you're not close to the coast you may feel differently...
One also has to question the impact on the local community... There is nowhere near enough parking on the site, meaning the residential road was rammed both sides with cars. The environmental impact must be huge and there is little evidence of trying to reduce this from the building works on site.
Overall, this could be an amazing facility, but is quite simply not ready to be open yet. Whilst I appreciate they need the trade to claw back some money, I fear that by opening too soon they will lose custom through bad reviews and word of mouth in both the local and surf community... A real shame...
One can only hope the management take the time to properly train the staff and resolve the teething problems before more people are put off!!
Well it's impressive, I'd love a tour of the engineering side of this attraction. I felt is only fair to give it excellent as it's just starting out. I hope the managers respond to these reviews and learn as they go along. I spoke to 5 members of staff non of them spoke Welsh, pity really. The cafe even after being open for less than 2 weeks was showing signs of non day to day dirt, the kick boards were scuffed, clumps of hair gathering in the corners, the coffee girl was lovely (ceri I think) some of the staff were so busy trying to look "cool" they were neglecting their customers. The longevity of this attraction is reliant on these, teething problems being got rid of, although the place is obviously far from ready, full price was still going charged £200 for a family of 4 lesson 1-2 hrs. It's sadly out of my budget. There seems inconsistency between brochure prices and what people are actually paying. Good luck I look forward to coming again.
I went to this on the opening day to just have a look. Think there was still a few teething problems with the wave as there was long breaks between each one and I should think the people in the water where getting very cold as not a warm day at all. Still feel it's got a long way to go as very much still a building site but you can see the potential. Also be prepared for the long journey through the narrow Welsh roads. I personally was disappointed that they didn't have anything special planned on there opening which was a huge let down. I had contacted them about this and was very disappointed by the response I got from them when they realised I wasn't a VIP guest!!! I do think they should have opened when at least the splash zone had been built or even advertised that it's not ready/built yet.
We went out for a drive decided to call and have a look at North Wales new surfing venture.Reading some of the reviews some people seem to think its Newquay surfing in the middle of Snowdonia.Wish we were a bit younger would definatley have a go looks great fun prices seemed reasonable from beginners to experienced surfers.Surrounding facilities are not finished as yet but once completed this looks a great place to visit and have fun if you don't want to surf just watch.Cafe good value for the money Pastie and chips Cheese and onion pie and chips £7 for two meals not bad come down to the coast you pay a bit more than that. They have constructed wooden Pods for rent these look nice and cosy.As i said once the place is completed will be brilliant for days of fun.
Popped by while on a weeks holiday to Wales to see what it was like from hearing about it on the news. The drive up is picturesque. When you get to Surf Snowdonia I expected it to be hidden away but you can see it straight from the road side among the houses. There's still a lot of building going on which didn't cause any problem at all and was quite exciting to see this BRILLIANT activity in the flesh.
Plenty of parking and easy to access. There is a coffee shop which also has a soft play zone for the kids. £5 a child. The clothing and surf store is above and sells surf gear, boards, clothing and accessories all at very reasonable prices (Reef, O'Neil, RipCurl).
The surf itself was crazy. You can watch it from the viewing balcony or outside on the decking which has plenty of tables and chairs. The surf goes off every minute from either end of the "sea" pool and then you can watch the guys girls and kids practising or managing to surf the waves. There was a surf school for kids which looked very popular and there were plenty of surfers trying in the waves....while being overlooked by impinge mountains. Crazy stuff.....but brilliant to stop by and witness.
Cafe was well stocked but too cold (the assistant said she was warm and whacked it up much to the "brr" of people walking by and working upstairs".
There is so much to like at surf Snowdonia. It's a great transformation it's a magic attractive spot, it's been built well and the facilities and people are top notch.
But....
Terrible value for money. Count 25 waves an hour split by 3 people. For advanced surfers its simply a gimmick. For those wanting a coffee and to drop a few kids this is a good laugh. But of you want to surf consider it a 20 metre ride fighting a push wide.
It was busy and beautiful and despite lots of smiles was clearly the worst run most expensive operation I have every had the misfortune to come across. It was all confusion from car park to exit. Everything from locker room malfunction to board selection to knowledge of entry point out water temperature. A shambles.
6 waves for 55 pounds. An expensive mistake.
