We were 3 families that rented the Old Winery and our experience was outstanding. The villa is immaculate and every design detail is perfectly executed. The space was ample for 11 of us; lots of common spaces and then smaller areas for the kids to be together, and for adults to visit. The AC on the top floor was a god send in the hot afternoons (pay as you go). The pool was key for the kids and awesome for grown ups to cool off. The garden has a ping pong table and trampoline, along with a small kids trike. These added details were much appreciated! We rented bikes during our stay and that was a nice perk for the grown ups. We were able to zip into town for pastries and wine and tour the adjacent vineyards and town in the evenings. Jay and Melanie were lovely hosts; Jay met us on arrival and was very personable and kind. Melanie was the one who handled all of the communications and was able to accommodate our request for cots for the kids. The town of Canet is small but there is a good kids park and mediocre boulangerie and supermarket. For beaches we visited Narbonne plage and Gruisson plage, about 30-40 min away. Carcassone is a must if visiting the region.
Overall, this was our most luxurious rental and best experience hands down, coming from travelers who rent often in the south of France. We would highly recommend and return without question!
We had a wonderful 2 weeks staying at the Old Winery. It was me, my husband, our 15 month old and our dog for the first week, then both sets of our parents joined for the second week.
There was plenty of room in the villa and all the bedrooms were very comfortable, huge beds! The kitchen was a great size and had all the facilities we needed (including CBeebies!).
There is aircon on the top floor which was needed, as the top floor was pretty warm (due to a heatwave). The air con is charged on a meter but if you set the fan on low and the temperature not too low it doesn't cost much at all to keep it at a comfortable temperature.
The pool was wonderful and Jay came to clean it regularly. We BBQ'd every night and sat on the terrace to eat our dinner. It's not overlooked and so peaceful with wonderful views of the mountains,
We visited Carcassonne a very pretty medieval city and a lovely beach called Gruissan. Both less than 40 mins away. We also spent quite a lot of time at the lake at Homps, Very refreshing for swimming and lots of shade so great for our little boy and elderly parents.
We also enjoyed walking into Canet the local town, just a couple of minutes walk and has a handy village store, a butchers, a bakers, a pizza restaurant and a swing park. There are also some other lovely restaurants just a couple of minutes drive away.
Would highly recommend the Old Winery for a relaxing holiday. Only things to be aware of are there are a couple of flights of stairs up to 3 of the bedrooms (in case of older holiday makers), and if its windy it's difficult to find very much shade, as you can't really have the parasols up or the canopy on the deck out. We didn't really find these things too much of a problem and would definitely stay at the Old Winery again.
Thanks for all your hospitality and all your helpful advice about the local area Jay and Melanie!
