You could quite easily step back in time at the Steak Pit and in so many ways, that's its charm. A somewhat limited food menu is complimented by a decent wine list and very attentive waiter called David, the desserts are also worth a special mention. All in all, a very good meal for the price (including plenty of warm bread and various mustard's).

Having moved to Melbourne some 20 years ago, whenever i would come back to see friends and family the Steak Pit was top of the list! Sadly, our most recent visit was a complete disappointment. The decor is still superb, our waiter was also, but what has happened to the patrons? the answer is in the menu and the missing extras. These may only seem small things but when you add them all up..... fail. No bread, butter, oil... a changed and boring menu, Filet Mignon was a hit for me and others for years. A small sad looking little potato, not in a jacket, no sour cream, no mustards, no sizzling plate. The Eye fillet at 200gm is too small for some, the Scotch was OK at best, and the sides hardly worth mentioning. The desert was a winner no question. Steak Pit you have lost your way and i never thought in 20-25 years of frequenting i would ever say that. Patrons are voting with their feet and you lost 6 more last night.

I frequented this restaurant many times but hadn't been in the last 4 years. I was so looking forward to going back there last Saturday night and found the whole experience disappointing. After being shown to our table our napkins were not placed on our lap as was previously. There was no bread provided even though there was bread plates and cutlery. We had hoped to have quite a few drinks but we were left unattended by the wait staff for most of the night. The meal was average and was accompanied only by a small potato, everything else was a side order and extra. The positive was the desserts which were the highlight of the night. So disappointing to see such an iconic restaurant a shadow of its former self. There was no fine dining about this experience. The only thing memorable was the bill.

Our family has loved and frequented The Steak Pit for 40 years. It has been the venue for many special family occasions.

Staff are still wonderful, ambiance is comfortable and classic. Unfortunately I believe the menu has lost its way.

For the price of the steaks, they've been consistently underwhelming of late. Served with nothing more than some steamed broccolini and a potato croquette with absolutely zero flavour. I would expect more for the price, especially in a regional restaurant! Even in Melbourne, these are fine dining prices... in a restaurant that really isn't fine dining anymore.

Steaks used to be served with gorgeous vegetable sides as part of your meal. We all remember the much loved potatoes that used to bubble away on the old plates! Delicious! The vegetable accompaniments now just feel like an after thought.

On recent visits, there has been no bread to start. No assortment of mustards offered with steaks (perhaps they are available on request but they were not offered as they used to be). Desserts were pleasant but underwhelming for the price also. If it were not for the sentimental memories here, based on 3-4 recent visits... my family and I would not return.

Fingers crossed that the menu and overall food offering returns to glory days one day soon. This review is written in the spirit of constructive criticism. Anywhere can have an off night, but the trend has been consistently downward for us recently. We won't give up, and I'll be the first to write a glowing review if things turn around.

They have a Dinner special of 2 courses for $16-95. We availed ourselves and we're not disappointed. We both had the same main course of battered fish which was so lightly done with a crisp batter. The chips were chunky, hot & very tasty. The tartare sauce was full of flavour. A delicious salad was included. Our dessert was sticky date pudding with a strawberry & cream. It was delicious with just the right amount of sauce so you didn't run out prior to finishing. A very delightful experience.
