Gainsborough Cottage with Devon Marsdens Cottages

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 31 Aug 2022
We arrived after a five and half hour road trip to find the dirtiest smelliest and dated cottage we have ever stayed in! I chose it for the view and that didn’t disappoint but the filthy cottage totally shocked us! I had to start cleaning it soon as we arrived as the loos were all disgusting! Never been cleaned properly under the seats for ages by looks of them all. The dust was thick on skirtings. The kitchen had crumbs on oven and tops and floor! Inside cupboards never been cleaned in ages and microwave had marks on glass plate from last guests /guests. Pots had food bits on them on some plates ! Curtain rail in bedroom just propped up as all fixings broken ! Curtains couldn’t be opened (fortunately two windows in that room . Other bedroom bed had loose slats that kept falling through! Patio table had legs removed to block a gap in wall ! Only three legs anyway! Patio chairs were plastic faded type filthy and worn and looked unsafe as did the patio with loose slabs . Apparently already reported by another holiday maker according to a neighbour .I rang Devon Marsden to complain but no answer and then closed til the Monday! We suffered the cottage as no other options. Have been writing and ringing past two weeks but although they have photo evidence still awaiting some sort of compensation. The neighbour told us a previous family wouldn’t stay ! They got alternate accommodation. I am writing this review due to all other reviews seemed to have stopped in 2021 so I think people need to know what a scammer the owner of the cottage is and terrible practice Devon Marsdens cottages have! I also forgot I'd hidden my purse behind the door curtain as heavy and didn't have a safe place to put it...only completely forgetting it til I got home! Rang Devon Marsden cottages stating exactly where it was. They eventually said cleaners didn't find it...surprise surprise...so I said please inform next holiday guests as I know 100% it is behind the curtain. So a helpful assistant rang the guest himself and they found it! So just showed even more how much the so called cleaners cleaned the place! Really still so angry that we paid a lot for a dump of a place that is only selling due to it's view! And I wasn't the first person to complain but nothing has been done. If anyone would like photos please feel free to ask me and I can provide.

Loved our cottage. Bed was comfortable, lots of room in the cabin and everything we needed. The chocolates and bottle of sparkling waiting for us was a lovely touch. Sue and Martin were lovely to deal with. We hope we can come back sometime.

We spent 3 nights at 1903 cottage. It was a nice surprise when we entered our cottage. It was cosy and the room was spotless. The little touches were noticed and appreciated. The spa is big enough for 2 to enjoy and the bed comfy. We found it mostly peaceful through out our stay and were able to sleep well at night. We ordered a breakfast package which we recommend and waiting in the cottage to cook at our own leisure. Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to light the fire as it was warm but would be lovely to have going on a cool winters nite. Would recommend this place and know you wouldn't be disappointed. Christine and Christopher😊

The 1903 Period Cottages are a very comfortable place to stay. Sue and Martin are wonderful hosts and want their guests to feel at home. We had an extremely enjoyable stay and will recommend the cottages to all our friends. We are planning to return in the not to distant future.

Cosy, comfy, clean and great value for money especially when the prices were not bumped like other places over the long weekend and also no minimum 2 nights restrictions. short drive to the beach and shops. Coal fire was great at night.

What a hidden, charming "little treasure" is this place. Sue and Martin excelled at making our stay memorable and we wanted for nothing. All the modern day luxuries in an old world setting. Immaculately presented, very comfortable bed, and even a spar. It was a rainy night so warming in front of a fire in this setting was nostalgic and special for us. Pricing was very reasonable and I would not hesitate to recommend this BnB.
