Owner description: The caves have preserved an outstanding fossil collection. The Wonambi Fossil Centre offers visitors the opportunity to discover what the area was like over 200,000 years ago.

It was 45C and the idea of going into a cave sounded pretty good. We did two caves, one on our own and the other guided. The first was the stick tomato cave and the guided was the Victoria fossil cave. Both were interesting but the guided one was better due to our great guide Catherine. Lots of different formation and fossils to see as well as a couple of replicas of animals that perished in the caves. By the way it was much cooler down in the caves than up above! A great info centre as well.

The bat tour in the evening was our highlight. I personally love Blanche cave. Our boys really enjoyed Victoria fossil cave and our guide Frank was very informative and good was the younger children. Highly recommend

The tour of the Fossil Cave is suitable for most ages as the passages are not too steep or difficult. Our tour guide was excellent; she was able to talk to a mixed group (young children to adults) without talking over the top of the children or speaking down to the adults. Among other things, it was amazing to find out the number different species of kangaroos that they have found fossil remains of.
If you plan to visit, ring the Visitor Centre, as the times do change from the advertised times on the web site if there is an increased demand. Also, unless you are staying close by you may also want to order your tickets on line to secure your spot in the tour. It is a popular tour, so if your time is limited you may miss out.

This cave system is worth a visit even for those who have seen many other tourist caves as it has a little more to offer due to the world class dig sites. Show cave tours are guided by professional interpreters through interestingly decorated caves. The Wonambi Fossil Centre is worth a visit too.
The low ridges and the limestone these caves are developed in, along with the large number of entrances creates a system different to the caves at Buchan, Jenolan and other east coast tourist caves. We have been here a few times now and always enjoy the visit.
The adjoining café is ok for a quick lunch or coffee!!
