“Japan in the Snowy Mountains”

Takayama Restaurant Bar
Ranked #6 of 61 Restaurants in Jindabyne
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: USD 6 - USD 25
Description: Takayama Restaurant Bar is situated in the alpine region of NSW Snowy Mountains in a ski town called Jindabyne. It pays homage to the Izakaya style pubs you find on and near the slopes of the Japanese ski fields, which is where the boys Stefan, Ralph and Jake were inspired to open a restaurant to try to bring a little taste of that back to Jindabyne. We offer a menu which is influenced by the mountains of Japan with a our take on it. We have a range of drinks readily available to those who are dining, including cocktails, beer on tap, wines and spirits. Relax with a Sapporo from the tap and some edamame beans, while we cook your dinner after you've skied or snowboarded all day!

Was very pleased with how close the food tasted to the same food I have eaten in Japan. I wish the service was faster. When we reserved the table two weeks in advance and were told it was only for two hours. The food took almost 90 minutes after we ordered so not much time to eat it. Staff was friendly and the food was good.

Closest thing to a genuine izakaya I've found in Oz. They use excellent ingredients... meats direct from local farmers, real wasabi shipped up from, Tasmania, and so on.

Chef has worked in Japan for years and has managed to keep many Japanese textures, flavours and presentation details despite the obvious difficulties of getting authentic ingredients locally. That said, the final result is as skilfully crafted as any similar place in Japan. Have been here twice this trip and tried ... tapas style ... almost every dish on the menu and not one was a disappointment and some (thinking the baby scallops, the seared tuna sashimi and that old standby the pork katsu) were superb.

Not a lot to be said against this place. Perhaps it's too close to the police station in a ski town to let drivers enjoy the Japanese draught beer and the sake....

We will be back before we head home again and really hope they are still here when we get back for the next ski season. Perhaps with a slightly expanded menu and sake list.

Rcommended! Remember to book or you'll have to take your chances of finding a spot at the bar.

Really great night and lovely food. We shared edamame, pork gyoza and corn balls. All were delicious and my partner also had scallops which he said were yummy. I had the gingerita cocktail and then the Mountain lychee. Both were fantastic, however the Mountain Lychee cocktail was the bomb! My daughter and I both had Miso Ramen which was also great and my partner had Chicken Curry Katsu, we all tried the sauce which was yum. All in all really great food and drinks. The only thing I will say , as others have before it is cold in there.

Thank Sarlily
