Luxury and History in Queenstown

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 week ago
A surprise overnight stay here as part of an organised tour, en-route to kayak the Gordon River. We were made to feel welcome by hosts Karen and Steve, who told us all about the fascinating history of this stately home, and provided a delicious evening meal and silver-service breakfast. The rooms are luxurious, the beds very comfortable, and lots of little personal touches that make guests feel welcome. Thanks so much for your hospitality!

We are sincerely touched by your words of praise. Thank you. We love to hear that our guests leave us with a 'forever memory' for the right reasons. We feel it is important to endeavor to correctly 'read' our guests individual preference for interaction with us as hosts and privacy to enjoy the house in their own way.

Karen and Steve are wonderful hosts-nothing was too much trouble. We felt pampered in the Owen suite-what a treat. Everything went like clockwork. Karen organised dinner bookings and a trip on the Heritage train. The National Trust House is enchanting and the history is fascinating. Steve and Karen’s knowledge of the history of the house is impressive and their passion is inspiring.

Room tip: Take the host’s advice regarding meals and tours.

Wow - thank you for your words of praise. We have just clicked over into our 10th year in the business, so we should be having everything run like clockwork by now!
The 'fascinating' history of the house is what inspired us in the first place, when we considered purchasing the business. The house has lots of stories to tell - it's not just a house.
We sincerely appreciate you leaving this review, your comments certainly assist others with their decision making when considering their itinerary when visiting the West Coast. Organising your bookings: we consider that just part of the service we should offer..
Again, thank you.

What a wonderful experience. Penghana is a 19th century mansion overlooking Queenstown. We stayed two nights in the Owens Room. It is a spacious and luxurious room with a separate dressing room leading to the bathroom. Our hosts, Steve and Karen were so friendly and nothing was too hard for them. Breakfast in the morning was silver service and lovely. It was the little things that really made our stay so enjoyable - access to an upstairs lounge, fruit cake on arrival, a carafe of port in the room, making a booking for us at Mimso Restaurant, etc. We thoroughly recommend Penghana for luxury accommodation.

Room tip: Be prepared to be pampered

We recall your first visit was on a budget some 40 years ago, when the hills were bare. Pleased we've sent you away this time with very different memories.
We pride ourselves on assisting our guests to have the best tourist experiences on offer (and we have several with national award winning tags) and to steer our guests towards the best dining experiences.... some quirky!

Penghana Bed & Breakfast is a magnificent place to stay with so much local history attached. We have stayed there 5 times as a group and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Steve and Karen are perfect hosts, who cater for your every need. Great views of the surrounding area, it is breathtaking. The house has been beautifully decorated, with impeccable attention to detail. The beds are extremely comfortable and provide a great nights sleep. Having breakfast in the dining room is a highlight: the food and service is first class. I would rate this accommodation 6 stars if I could.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay with us. It is most appreciated. We love hosting your group and spoiling you.
Sorry the weather didn't look after you this time and limited your love of driving our winding roads, but pleased you all took the opportunity to experience the Wilderness Railway and were overwhelmed by where it took you and the quality of what the trip provides. Queenstown has other surprises for another time too.
