Fabulous location, gracious, helpful hosts

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Oct 2024
We recently stayed for 3 nights at Penghana. It exceeded our expectations. It is obvious why this opulent house is a National Trust listing. The hosts, Karen and Steve, are knowledgeable, passionate and accommodating. The breakfasts are legendary. The hosts' attention to detail makes for a comfortable, memorable and enjoyable experience. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful romantic stay. Karen has incredible attention to detail from bathroom accessories to decor and her knowledge of the house and surrounding history was unsurpassed. Breakfast was a real treat and felt like visiting a rich great aunt. Steve’s poached eggs en pointe. Plenty of places to relax, read and sip port. Warm sheets for a cold night and all the comforts you need including access to a kitchen equipped with everything you need for a night in or snack. Everything was thought of including travel sweets for our onward journey. A delightful and enchanting house

A beautiful historic home full of antiques and history of Queenstown and the families that inhabited this wonderful home. Hosts Karen and Steve were welcoming and provided every possible need or want on every aspect of our stay. Quality inclusions throughout the entire property. Breakfast was just as perfect as the rest of our sadly short stay.

Thank you so much for your positive words. It warms our heart to hear what aspects of our guests' stay were the highlight/s.
Yes so often guests regret not booking 2 or 3 nights to not only take in all that is on offer here, but also to just relax, unwind and enjoy the house and its story. We enjoyed meeting you and hope one day to see you revisit us ..... with the car club???

A friend and I recently spent a weekend at Penghana Bed & Breakfast in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania. Penghana (now a National Trust property) was built in the late 1800’s as the home for the first general manager of the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Company. Our hosts Karen and Steve were very friendly and were only too happy to recommend things to see and do and eating places in town, as well as to book tables for us. Steve cooked our silver service breakfasts to order each morning and Karen shared her extensive knowledge of the property and its occupants over the years until 1995 when the Mount Lyell Company ceased to exist. The property is beautifully furnished and maintained and I highly recommend a visit if you are looking for a little luxury in Queenstown.

We certainly appreciate you taking the time to comment on your stay. Thank you. Time at Penghana is much more than just somewhere to rest. The story of the house and its now 126 year life, has so many high points. Thank you also for commenting on our breakfast. We take this part of our guests' stay seriously by sourcing the best 'local' ingredients and keeping breakfast menu simple, traditional and presented with style.

I've had the pleasure of staying at Penghana on several occasions and can't wait to stay again next time I'm on the wild west coast. There is so much history in this incredible town and Penghana is the perfect place to retire after your daily adventures. The rooms are immaculate and everything has been thought of. The hosts Steve and Karen have since become friends as they went above and beyond to make every stay joyful and luxurious. I have stayed in nearly every room at one time or another and each has it's own unique charm. Karen makes a beautiful soup if you're after a nice supper and don't want to venture out, definitely recommend this! The cellar is well stocked with local and international wines for a nightcap and there's chocolate to match. I just loved my time staying here, it felt like home, only nicer. Steve and Karen are incredibly knowledgable and always accommodating if you're interested in a friendly chat about the history of the house and surrounds. They're also very understanding when privacy is preferred. Staying at Penghana truly is like stepping back in time, a rare treat you won't forget.

Room tip: The Huxley room also has a bath which is a nice luxury in winter.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on your various stays with us. In particular that it feels like home. We do strive to make all our guests feel at home but in particular those who are travelling for work reasons who need something more than the 4 walls of a motel/hotel environment.

This most beautiful National Trust property is now the most delightful and sumptuous B and B. The rooms are stuffed with gorgeous furniture, super comfortable big beds and lovely art. Linen is top quality, towels are fluffy, hot water is generous and consistent, a bugbear of mine is dodgy showers!
The hosts, Karen and Steve know their business and it’s their little touches that raise this place up. Things like complimentary port and fruitcake are a nice surprise. A complimentary taxi down to the pub and back goes above and beyond. I was there for a number of days and nothing was too much, yet at the same time they are discreet and let you do your own thing. It was the middle of winter, but sitting in the lounge with a book from their collection and a glass of red surrounded by Queenstown’s history was special indeed.
Best view of the town and the mountains.

Nicholas we appreciate you submitting a review on you time at Penghana. Thank you for the insight you've provided. Yes in our winter months towels, a good shower and consistent hot water is an absolute must.
Thank you for your comment that we remain discreet. Yes ensuring we give each guest the amount of attention and distance is so important and we hope that after 9 years here we have mastered the skill.
Yes - that view .... we never go tired of it. Each day when I open the curtains its different and I say WOW!
