Having done the wonderful sunset cruise with Greg from Lake Argyle Cruises previously and thoroughly enjoyed it, this time we opted for a canoeing experience instead to balance up some of the pancakes consumed earlier! With a friend we headed off to the Lake Argyle Cruises office to pick up our life jackets, paddles and a map before heading down to the boat ramp where our canoe was already waiting for us. We set off across the beautiful lake, with the stunning hills in the back ground, heading for one of the islands and pulled our canoe up onto a small beach for a rest and a swim. The water was a perfect temperature for swimming and it was very peaceful; just the thing for a Sunday afternoon. We were wishing we'd brought along some snacks as we'd worked up quite an appetite. Lake Argyle is definitely a must during any visit to the Kimberley. Contact Greg at Lake Argyle Cruises.
We did the sunset cruise with Matt, starts at 2.30 pm and finishes about 6pm
Matt takes guests to various sites on the Lake where you will see rock wallabies, fresh water crocodiles and the most amazing scenery I have come across. Lake Argyl is a massive body of water stretching as far as the eye can see, surrounded by red rock escarpments. I was lucky enough to film a fresh water croc catch and devour a catfish.
The cruise includes free beer or champagne while stopped for photos of the sun setting
Well worth the price at $95 per person
Highly recommended
Of course the surface of Lake Argyle was barely wind ruffled as we cruised across it in the open boat. But the uncanny part was knowing we were metres above where the Ord River once flowed between banks way below us.What we saw as islands were once the peaks of nearby hills. We saw rock wallabies, photographed freshwater crocodiles, and held bread over the side for angler fish to shoot out of our hands.
Towards sunset we went for a dip in the silky water and watched the colours of the hills and sky redden around us. After we climbed back on board there were glasses of bubbly and snacks. A rather strange but memorable experience.
My husband and I did the evening tour yesterday (2.30 to after sunset) with Greg as coach driver and Matt as tour guide on the lake. Matt's knowledge of Lake Argyle in terms of its history, geography, local wildlife, vegetation...everything... is very impressive. (He would be my phone-a-friend on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire). This, plus his good sense of humour, made the tour for us. There was a mix of families, grey nomads and younger crew in the boat and we all had a laugh and a good time. There is another tour operator there with a seemingly fancier boat, but these guys are the original deal who we would highly recommend. They are the blue brochure when you're looking for info. A boat tour of Lake Argyle is a must do when you're visiting.
This is a wonderful cruise, you have to get on the water to fully appreciate the size of Lake Argyle which is 21 times as big as Sydney Harbour. We did the sunset cruise and it was awesome, what an experience to be in that special place and at sunset be swimming and then sipping some bubbles !
We are glad you enjoyed your time with us on the Sunset Cruise. Thank you for coming out with us.
Not my cup of tea, accept that it's interesting to see the size of the lake, but hand feeding the same wallaby every day. ..
Thank you for your feedback.
