“Lovely house - but you are not alone.”

The good: lovely, little house. Large pool, excellent outside area, actually better than the photos. Kitchen is large, reasonably well equipped. Bedrooms are a good size with good storage. Showers are roomy and there is plenty of nice, hot water. The walk to the lovely sandy beach - which was virtually empty at Christmas - is quite short, approx. 200m. There is a really good beach bar at the end of the road where we had breakfast most mornings. Their fresh passionfruit juice is great. The walk to the restaurants in the Fisherman's Village takes around 20 minutes - you will want to bring a torch or your phone; it gets quite dark at night and the traffic is quite fast. You can walk on the beach if you wish. Add 10 minutes for the walk to the town centre.
The not so good: We were not informed that Betty and Evens who look after the house live in the grounds. Their little (seemingly windowless) house has its terrace - where they spend most of their time - facing your terrace just next to the pool. This means that they are around 10m from you when you are outside. While they are lovely they have no concept of keeping the noise down with regular shouted phone conversations on the speaker. Neither of them speaks any English at all and our GCSE French and Spanish was not up to the standard where we could communicate. Most of our attempts to ask for things were met with a shrug and it was unclear whether this was because of lack of understanding or interest - I must admit it felt more like the latter.
Betty would freely enter the house even when we were there without asking permission and the time would change day by day. When we contacted Bernard, the owner, he simply asked us to tell them not to do it. When we asked again he phoned them to ask them to stop - we could hear the conversation clearly - and this made the rest of the stay feel quite uncomfortable. It was not a very relaxing holiday.
General comments about Las Terrenas:
The town is mad and good fun: traffic whizzing along, people trading everywhere, very loud and lively. Las Ballenas beach by the house is protected from the waves by a reef approx. 50m out so it is better for smaller children than most of the other beaches in the area. It is sandy with no stones. The reef has a few fish that are worth snorkelling out to see but the reef itself is dead. If you have a car you can go to the absolutely beautiful Playa Bonita beach close by. Houses here are far more upmarket, it feels very exclusive. There is a great beach bar, Ramona, which serves drinks, freshly made juices (the tamarind was brilliant) and meals. It is really lovely. The waves are much larger than in Las Terrenas because there is no reef but if you go to the eastern end the point shelters you. There are a few stones but it is mainly sandy.
We went on a kayaking trip through the mangroves with Flora Tours. The office in town is not always staffed by English speakers (the town is more French than Spanish speaking) but the people taking you on the tour are fantastic. Really good local knowledge and keen to show us the crabs, the different mangrove trees etc. It was very enjoyable.

The maid and the housekeeper are living in a small house in the garden and they are the best insurance for safety and home service and so the best way to spend relaxed vacations in Dom Rep, not the same as in Europe.
