“A little bit of heaven on earth”

Thank you Luiz and Rita for being such great hosts, and Helena for making such a fine house available to a few lucky visitors! The house is as advertised, or if anything the descriptions understate the truth. it's a rare place, which could only be fully realized by the wonderful people who care for it. It is fully stocked with cookware and conveniences. It has great wifi for internet access. Each of the rooms on the ocean side (dining room, living room and master bedroom) has full windows and double doors opening to the deck. We kept the doors next to the bed open all night for the fresh breeze and ignored the strange calls of the Cory's shearwaters. There are no land animals to worry about and the only bugs were some harmless flies that would fly around in squares in the middle of the room, but otherwise leave you alone. Rita prepared a delicious meal of octopus stew and beef stew with fresh baked bread and fresh picked beans for the two of us for only €25, which we found quite a bargain as we got two full dinners from it and had extra bread for breakfasts and lunch. We didn't know this in advance, but next time we will buy organic eggs from Rita instead of getting them at the store. Luiz and Rita also welcomed us with a basket of fresh fruit and vegetables, a half dozen eggs, and a fresh baked carrot walnut cake that was really delicious. The house has a complete collection of travel books and brochures about the area, and Luiz could fill in any missing details in depth. The dirt road leading to the house is kind of rough, but Luiz says the parish will be paving it this summer. The Nissan Qashqai we rented from Ilha Verde did not have any trouble negotiating it, but drivers used to city roads might find it a challenge. The house itself was easy to find, but the GPS made it even easier by putting in the coordinates 37.760492°, -25.153796°. There is plenty to do on the beautiful east end of Sao Miguel but we drove several times to Ponta Delgada for other activities, which took about 1.25 hours unless we got distracted by the many miradouros (scenic overlooks). A villager I spoke to described Helena's house as a little bit of heaven on earth, and I think he's right.

“Perfect in every way, a true gem”
Reviewed 23 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Luis and Rita and wonderful hosts, most attentive and helpful in every possible way. Everything was spotless, we couldn't have wished for anything better or more.

The villa was too good to be true, waking up to those ocean views was just stunning. We've had all kinds of weather and didn't mind it one bit. It was all an amazing show of nature, special in every way.

Sao Miguel is a true gem, one of my favourite nature holidays. Quinta do Sanguinhal made one of the best holidays even better, and that pretty much sums it up.

“An absolutely amazing home! The highlight of our trip!”
Reviewed 5 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

This house is very spacious, immaculately clean, beautiful and homey. The kitchen is well stocked with all of the necessary gadgets and new-looking appliances, the washer and dryer are in excellent working order, there was plenty of chopped firewood stacked for our use and there was even a kite for the kids to fly on a windy day. And on top of all that the view from the home is spectacular! Rolling green hills and a beautiful ocean. We even spotted whales during the calm mornings, right from the patio while having our breakfast.

The home is located in a quiet and friendly village that has two convenience stores stocked with most foods. Even though the home is located on one side of the island, we used it as a home base for our 10-day trip from which to visit all the different sites on the entire island - only a one hour drive from the airport, if you take the highway on the northern side of the island. I could easily spend an hour typing up all of the different sites to see.

Luiz and Rita, our hosts, live only a short distance away and were available to answer any questions we had (They have so many interesting things to say about the Azores). They even let us feed and milk the goats at their place (a real treat for the kids - both human and goat). Rita gave us homemade goat cheese and baked us a cake (both delicious), and left us a few of her eggs from their own free range chickens.

I would highly recommend this rental to anyone visiting Sao Miguel. I already miss it.

“Home”
Reviewed 5 April 2015 for a stay in March 2015

The title is "home" because after hiking, visiting, and exploring Sao Miguel on most days of our trip, what we most wanted was to get to the house and have a meal (including lovely Azorean wine) while sitting outside on the bench enjoying the views and overall ambience of the area/house.

The house has everything that I can imagine needing for comfort. Its location is remote, although it seems like other than Ponta Delgada most any other location would indeed be remote in this peaceful and quiet island. We may as well have had a similar wonderful experience with other properties we considered, but with Quinta do Sanguinhal we are certain that we made a fantastic decision and have no reason to wonder if we could have done better. In fact, we are as certain as someone can ever be of anything that we shall return not only to Azores, but very likely to the same house (if possible, a quick review of available upcoming dates revealed almost full occupancy for the next 8 months - we absolutely understand why!!).

I am fluent in 2 languages and can get by with a 3rd, yet it's hard to find a way of describing Luis and Rita with words that do their hospitality and spirit justice. Accepting our invitation for the two of them to join us for a fabulous dinner Rita cooked was likely the most enriching experience of our trip. When we consider that at one point we had reservations at a hotel in Furnas, that's when we think of regret in that we would have lost immersing ourselves in what the Azores is about legitimately and naturally. For Luis to then guide us on a hike the next morning that included more history of Azores and getting to know him even more was, WOW.

You will read some reviews about there being an issue with the road to the house without a four-wheel drive. Since we rented a small Peugeot, indeed we left the car where the road ended and walked a very short distance to the house after driving all the way to the house upon arrival and dropping off our luggage. It was not a problem whatsoever for us to walk to/from the car and in typical Luis fashion he offered to drive his 4-wheel drive upon our departure to get our luggage. Obrigado.

Rafael
