Underwhelming

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Mar 2022
I literally cried when I got here with disappointment. From the start the liaison was less than average. Booked via online platform which asked us what time we planned to arrive - i answered that it would be sometime around midday and received an email response "unable to accommodate early check in" ; somewhat taken aback, we never asked for an early check in? not the warmest welcome. Should have heard the alarm bells ringing loudly when the booking was deemed non-refundable.

We had a lovely studio room which was very well presented. We had a great view of Coolum beach from our balcony.
The receptionist, Cristiana was very warm and welcoming.
The swimming pool is in a great position and there is also a separate kiddies pool.
The location is perfect! Literally a short walk to the beach, shops, restaurants and the Surf Club.
We will definitely be staying again!

This is the place we always stay in Coolum, it is very handy to walk to the shops. The view from the rooms is magnificient. We stay in a studio room mainly because we view the sea from the bed, almost like being onboard a ship! The room has everything we need, no cooking facilities however but we sacrifice that for enjoyment of being able to sit in bed and enjoy a coffee whilst looking at the sea, see photo. There are lifts, so no climbing stairs. The staff are great.

The only thing going for this place now is the location which you could not fault at all, right across from the beach walking distance to Coles and cafes. Which is lucky because there is no allocated parking which isn't mentioned until after you have booked and they even suggest you don't leave at night otherwise you'll miss out on a parking spot. Each night was a struggle and stressful occurance if I would get a carpark, not to mention the carpark itself is very cramped with some parking spots so incredibly tight to access. But when there are no other options you just have to make it work. Not being able to take your car out at night because your worried you won't be able to get a carpark is ridiculous and I have never experienced this in any of the accommodation places we have stayed at over the years. There was a constant smell of sewerage in the room which I see someone else has noted so it's obviously an ongoing issue. It is very run down and there was a used facemask on the floor when I arrived. I just hoped it was the cleaning crews. You could hear people walking around upstairs, I could hear them sweeping the floors and banging it on the walls there was a lot of noise. Kids running through the halls at 6am screaming their heads off. It's old, run down and just feels dirty and after four nights I was so relived to just be out of there. Would never stay there again.

Room tip: Stay somewhere else

I checked in here on Sunday the 22nd of August and checked out on Tuesday. I had a great stay here . Yes it is a bit older but the beach is across the road with in walking distance. The pool was a good size. The spa at the end was good even if I kept getting water up my nose.Good walking path across the road going up to the look outs. Enjoyed drinks and a view at the Surf Lifesaving Club at sunset on both nights. The shops are with in walking distance and the public toilets are next to the lifesaving club across the road. Check the hotel directory when checking in as I got caught out trying to find some sort of convenience store to get extra milk for my coffee and cereals I bought with me. I bought the milk at an organic store in the middle of town. It wasnt until the next day I found the Coles tucked away down a side street near the Coolum Hotel. There were a couple of other take away shops there that looked good. I had dinner at Hot Chilli Bean Thai cafe on Monday night. The food and cocktails were great. If you want to go here you are best off going on a week night as they get busy on weekends with minimum staff. I did a walk up Mt Coolum on Monday Morning. It is a hard climb and some sort of physical fitness is required. The ground is rocky with constant steps. The view at the top is great.
I didnt eat at the restaurant out the front as its closed on a Monday night.
I had a great stay here and plan to come back on one of my days off.

Room tip: I recommend the higher floors. You get a good view of the water.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with friendly smiles and all the information we needed. Nothing was too much trouble. When leaving our battery was flat and the manager so kindly recharged our battery. What an asset he is to the retreat. The lady on reception couldn't have been nicer either. Our room was fantastic. Clean, wonderful views, air con and fans. Great provision of things such as clothes rack with pegs plus everything one could need on a holiday. The retreat is so close to the beach, restaurants, surf club etc. Fabulous balconies with outdoor chairs and table. Very comfortable bed and lounge chairs. Beautiful clean linen and the whole place was so clean. The location was incredible and such value for money. Pool and spa heated and wonderful. I used them every day and it was mid winter! We were able to de-stress after a traumatic experience at home. Thank you so much.

Room tip: I can only speak for our room which was fantastic. 21a. 2 balconies. When doors closed traffic noise on esplanade reduced significantly.
