“Going Batty at Honeysuckle”
Reviewed 15 October 2013 for a stay in August 2013

Oh dear we feel like party poopers. We don’t disagree with all the comments for Honeysuckle Farm, it is potentially a great place to have a holiday especially for groups such as families looking for to celebrate a special occasion. However, the point of reviews is to help others gather information and make decisions so we do have some useful pointers that you should consider if you want to stay here. In line with Trip Advisor guidelines we tried to simply raise these matters with the owner but she is in denial unfortunately.
Firstly do check with the owner that she has dealt with the Bat problem, this is not mentioned in the website, obviously you don’t want to under-sell your holiday let but there are bats in the roof of the terrace. You only find out about this when you arrive and the little note is there on the side of the fridge telling you that they make a noise mid afternoon and leave ‘droppings’ on the terrace. Unfortunately the terrace is where you sit and eat at night so you are conscious that droppings could land on the table and with the best will it’s difficult to make sure you don’t miss any.
However, our experience of a closer experience of the bats came a couple of days in when a bat appeared in a bath. One of our party had to gently lift it and put it outside. The next few nights we had several incidents where bats flew into bedrooms and on one occasion down into a lounge. This was particularly disconcerting as one incident involved a bedroom with twin toddlers where there mother was ‘dive-bombed’ and in the same room when the shutters were opened three bats were clinging to the shutters. Just to add to this one of the twins had to be taken to hospital on an unrelated matter and therefore this additional stress was not really what was wanted.
If you booked a hotel room you might think it rather odd to get bats flying inside the hotel unfortunately the owner believes the bats to be harmless. When the matter was brought to her attention she responded by holding on to our deposit and refusing to repay it, which seems rather heartless given our experience involving bats but that brings me to the next point. We gave the owner every chance to respond to this matter but she simply ignored our concerns and instead chose a rather novel way to answer by with-holding our deposit, a case of the victim being mugged a second time.
The Agreement requires you to leave the house ready for the next person, we suggest you think carefully over this as in theory they can pin you down to minor points if it suits them, certainly we know we didn’t leave the house perfect but then again what value do you put on the experience with flying bats in the house? However, the owner decided that we had failed to meet our side of the bargain whilst selectively ignoring her failings, so beware on that point!
The weather is very hot down in the Landes area, 40c at one point, the fans struggle to keep it cool at night. We were told it was exceptionally hot but we think it gets very hot most summers, so if you are not one for the heat don’t book. The owner’s response is to keep the windows closed in the day and open at night, except that she forgets the bats like to have a look around.
The fridge could not cope it kept cutting out, so if you go out for the day you might get back to see it has over-heated and food could perish, the fridge requires replacing and isn’t big enough for groups of 10 plus.
The pool is showing signs of wear and tear and has no depth markings, it is quite deep for little ones with no ‘shallow’ end.

To reiterate we took these matters up with the owner we only wanted to make sure they understood our problems especially as we had young children in the party; Unfortunately all she could do was turn a deaf ear and keep our deposit for not leaving the place as she wanted.

See other reviews - this is the first complaint we have ever had.
Pipistrelle bats are about the size of a large butterfly. Their tiny droppings are found against the wall of the house. We have never before had complaints about bats, and we have never known them come into the house. Most people find them enchanting, they certainly do not dive-bomb people, and are very good at avoiding obstacles such as humans I am informed by the SPA (the equivalent of the RSPCA) There is an article in the house giving information on pipistrelle bats. Their echolocation system is above that of human hearing – it is not mentioned in the house that they make a noise mid-afternoon, just that we have bats roosting on the beam at the top of the terrace roof.
This particular family's deposit was retained because we had to hire an extra 2 cleaners (we always have 2 for inside and 2 for gardens and pool, this is inclusive in the cost of the holiday) therefore that day we had 4 cleaners to clean up inside the house and the terrace after the family left, and their deposit of £200 did not cover the 320 euro cost of 2 extra cleaners. They had left food all over the floors in places like under tables and under chairs, the dishwasher was left in a very dirty condition, cutlery in drawers and pots and pans in the cupboards were not clean. The cooker was filthy. The tiled floors were very sticky in places, obviously due to spilt drinks not properly cleaned up, meaning the floors had to be scrubbed, not just swept and mopped. We could go on but suffice to say that we have never had the house left in such a dreadful condition. The cost of 320 euros for 2 extra cleaners was the only reason that the deposit was not returned. 2 cleaners usually manage to clean the inside of the house in the 6 hours that we have between lets.
The fridge/freezer is huge and was new in March 2013, so when there were problems and it was reported to us, we arranged for an engineer to call (unfortunately this was just after the family had left.) He found nothing wrong with the fridge, just that the buttons had been inadvertently pressed, giving the wrong settings.
When this family were here, the weather was exceptionally hot and humid. Indeed tropical, which is very unusual. They asked for and were given extra fans to help cope. There are always fans in every room of the house.
The sides of the pool were newly tiled in April 2013.
After the family left, I wrote explaining why their deposit would not be returned to them, but they were not at all happy and asked me to return their deposit in exchange for a good review!

“Fantastic holiday house - idyllic setting, great facilities and very interesting region.”
Reviewed 8 September 2013 for a stay in August 2013

This is a perfect holiday house for a large group or extended family. There is so much space both inside and externally. The outside terrace with dining table was fantasic for every meal, the swimming pool was used constantly and the beds were comfortable. There was everything you could possibly want in the house, which was clean and tidy and very comfortably furnished - it was home from home. The surrounding area is beautiful, with great beaches not too far away, and Spain easily within reach for a day trip. I would highly recommend this cottage, which in reality is far better than the photographs show.

Liked best: The pool, the space, the garden, the location

“What an amazing place!”
Reviewed 27 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We have just enjoyed a fortnight at Honeysuckle farm and would thoroughly recommend it. We have never stayed in such a well equipped house. The outside seating area was loved by all, our party ranged in age from 9 to 82, and we didn't have to sit indoors at all. Even the day of the thunder storm we were able to watch and enjoy in comfort and be dry! The pool was big enough for all to enjoy and the barbie and poolhouse brilliant. We didn't venture out much but found Dax to be a lovely town and the Saturday market great for your fresh fruit and veg. The shop in Heugas was well stocked and the owners very friendly and patient with our limited french! We will most likely be back! Oh and it's well worth an evening star-gazing, what a sight!
