“Perfect Backpacker Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2011

Stayed here for one night and were impressed by how nice this place is. This is a popular backpackers and it is definitely not overrated.

Located near to the Kakanui beach reserve, Oamaru. The property is surrounded by sheep farm, with breathtaking view out to the ocean. Gloria, is a very nice host, giving all the help we need during our stay. The rooms are spotless clean and comfortable.

A place not to be missed when you are in Oamaru!

We stayed here last night and couldn't get over how nice this place is. The current owners have been here for a year and again you will not find nicer people. Helpful attentive and we got some hens eggs for lunch. The view out to the ocean is via 12 meters of windows next to a wood burning stove what more could you want. The showers and bathrooms is more like a hotel than a back packers the attention to detail is amazing.
We are staying again tonight we got snowed in this morning (first snow here in 20+ years) can't say I am sad to be stuck here at all.

WOW! Still the best hostel in NZ I have stayed in! Absolutely breathtaking place, quite a retreat! It was quiet and I mostly had the place to myself that night, so it was very peaceful and a good chance to recharge the batteries. The rooms all come off a beautiful main room centred around a wood burning stove with one side looking out fully to the beach. The kitchen and lounge were spotless and the bathrooms were pure luxury! Great host, even had some freshly laid eggs for breakfast from the hosts hens, which were yummy! It's double or twin rooms only and costs a little extra than your average hostel dorm, but there are no hidden charges! there's high speed free wireless, free linen and towels. It's definately worth the little extra, so treat yourself.

We had read the BBH reviews on this hostel and felt very lucky to be able to make a reservation.....as there are not very many rooms in this incredible hostel!! And, how lucky we were! This little "round" and very new hostel is fabulous!!! Hard to believe that this place is not booked solidly every day of the year. The views from the huge windows, the round gathering room with fireplace and real easy chairs, the incredible kitchen as part of a real GREAT room, the lovely double room with a door which led to the outside, the sound of the surf, while not to close but near enough to hear it, and the opportunity to be so close to where the little yellow-eyed penguins come ashore each night......all goes for making this hostel a "one of a kind" place to stay!!! Book in advance....and then, keep your fingers crossed that you can obtain a room......you will not be sorry!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are super!!!

This was a luxury backpackers. One of the best places we stayed in during our month in NZ. We stayed for 2 nights and could happily have stayed for more as the atmosphere was so friendly and relaxed and in an idyllic location right by the sea . The living area was clean, comfortable and well planned for communal living. Internet access was free which was most unusual. Gloria was welcoming and friendly - very keen that everyone who stays should have a good experience. I would heartily recommend this place to anyone even if backpackers hostels are not usually your thing. We loved it!
