Owner description: Steampunk hq, which opened in november 2011, is an art collaboration proudly based in oamaru, new zealand. It sets out to portray an industrial version of steampunk, with a giant sense of humour and larger than life visions of an off the wall steampunk universe. Steampunk HQ is well known for its full scale train engine that spits fire and billows smoke The lonely planet guide rates steampunk hq as one of nz’s best new tourist attractions.

Steampunk HQ is an interesting place to visit although there weren't too many exhibits. The building looks big but the actual exhibits only occupied two floors.
Steampunk HQ is located next to Victorian Precinct and is something unique for everybody. I would recommend to purchase discount tickets online from bookme and you will find up to 50% discounted tickets for this particular attraction instead of paying the full fee of 10NZ$.

We stumbled across this gem of a place over easter weekend as we were heading through Oamaru & took a quick detour to see the historic victorian area. Our boys aged 10 & 15yrs & the engineer hubby were in steampunk heaven. Some really fab creative pieces to inspire budding steampunk artists & also some quirky & fun interactive exhibits too. Well worth stopping an hour or so & checking it out. We can't wait to come back for the Steampunk festival later this year. Take a few $2 coins with you as a couple of exhibits take these to fire up (literally lol). If you have kids with you, don't miss the steampunk themed playpark by the harbour too.

We strolled past the building and were struck by the sculptures outside. We are no more aware of the steampunk culture as the average citizen but thought for ten dollars it is worth a look. Inside there are three rooms with large and small sculptures made of scrap metal and machinery, along with interactive exhibits and a general creepy ambiance. The artwork is very cool and the portal room is a must visit. If you are worried about what will happen in the room I can assure you it is not scary and there is nothing creepy in there! The yard is also full of art and features large works. Very nice even if you know nothing of steampunk.

Such a lovely surprise in amongst lots of metal and darkness then the fabulous light and music show! So happy! Could have stayed there for hours. Is definitely worth a visit.
