We had a good, well cooked fish and chips at The Whaler. This is a pub which serves hearty portions of decent, no frills food. Along with a host of decent beers. Reasonable prices too, with two mains and a couple of drinks coming in at $65. So if it’s fine dining, then that’s not what you’ll get. But if you’re after something decent after a day out at sea, then this isn’t a bad option. Service was honestly slow - before we ordered we were told about a half hour wait on food. And that’s how long it took to come out.

It’s got a decent ambience, and somehow seems to balance the tourist trade with locals playing pool and having a decent drink. Nice wood panelling inside too. So if you want an informal, relaxed Kaikoura meal then give this a go.

Meals were good but I would suggest more garlic is used in the garlic sauce so you can taste it. Steak was good and the fish was good and the ribs were great. Cheese cake also good, the creme brule was better than most ive had in a long time. Staff were friendly and obliging. We will be back.

Called in looking for a meal with the family.
Was only 5:30 and got the last available table - good sign we thought.
Their $19 Porterhouse steak was excellent - as were the fish & chips.
Had the meals on the table in about 5-10 mins, hardly time to enjoy the great selection of beers they have on tap. Will be back there next time am in Kaikoura .

We went here for a quick and easy meal. The place was busy but the service was very good. Overall the meal was good, my steak a bit over cooked but still tasty and priced well.

Went in the afternoon for a few beers. I loved the upstairs glassed deck area, lots of sunshine! The staff were all really nice. We didn't eat there so can't say anything about the food. Others were eating a looked like they were enjoying their meals!
