The fact that there are only 21 attractions in or around Greymouth - and these include the very good Shantytown which is several miles out - tells you all you need to know. Th iSite itself is attached to the railway station- you'd think that there would be something to do in Greymouth once you had completed the train ride - but no!

We noticed a walkway across the road from the station, and asked the iSite if this was a good walk and suitable for a picnic. They said it was; we set out on a featureless single track for some 15 minutes hoping to reach the sea, but reached a small industrial area and turned back. We got back in the car and looked for some form of public beach - Greymouth is on the coast, after all, where the Grey (well named) river meets the sea - but no such luck. We ended up driving out of town back towards Arthur's Passand had our picnic there.

The area you walked to is the wharf, a fishing port of Greymouth and major employer of many local families. There are a number of areas to stop for a picnic including Coal Park which you would have walked past or our very new town square again on the path you took or as a car was available many other areas within a short drive.

Here are some of the activities in the area, as mentioned Shantytown Heritage Park, if you like history and culture then this is the place to go. Greymouth is the home to the Monteith's Brewery, a NZ craft beer and you can take a tour of the brewery with beer tasting. It has one of NZ's best 4WD quad bike/buggy companies offering tours through native NZ bush. We have scenic tours available to the famous Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes, Hokitika Gorge, Tree Top Walkway and the Glaciers. There are caving tours where you can see glow worms. Heritage tours taking you to historic mining sites such as Brunner Mine. Rafting with half day, full day and overnight camping experience! We have the Wilderness Trail, a four day bike ride between Greymouth and Ross so you are able to hire a bike and do some of this trail. If you like fishing, we have plenty of rivers and lakes and a fishing guide can take you out. Keen on a surf well you are only a five minute drive from some of the best surfing beaches! And what is more we have some of the most beautiful sunsets on offer, the Coast is famous for them along with so many stunning walks. The district has so much to offer the visitor.

We ask for a tour to Pancake rocks a main atraction near Graymouth in the isite. They recommended one for 100 NZ dollars per person. We are a couple and we took what was a simple shattle to there (about 40 km) with no guide. So rent a car if you have the chance. That will save your money and time. The Pancake rocks deserve to be visited

Thank you for your feedback. The I-SITE's do not set the pricing for activities and tours. The operators set the price and we can only advise of the costs for their products. Certainly there are options available for getting to Punakaiki including car rental if you have a licence, tours via a number of companies available in the area and also the Intercity Coaches can take you there but you would have to spend the night before returning back due to their schedules. To be fair to the team they have only advised you of the cost of the product requested and the tour companies that operate to Punakaiki range in price from $106 to $115 per person. The Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes is a must do on the West Coast and I hope you enjoyed your visit to this location.

I was truly enthusiastic about this tour. Nevertheless it is rather a transportation to the free park of punakaiki. The place itself is amazing but we could have rented a car and drive by ourselves. There wasn’t explanations neither the tour did the promise of going to a cave in town. We still are reading to lean about what’s we have see there. I don’t recommend this tour at all. Sadly dissatisfied to have payed fir this poor service.

Thank you for your feedback Silvia. I will take these comments back to the tour company manager and also the tour driver on that day. Needless to say I am very disappointed to learn this was not to you expectations and I will certainly be following it up. I hope the rest of your experience on the West Coast was a pleasent and enjoyable one.
