Having read about this hotel almost went elsewhere. We found the Kingsgate a good quality hotel at its price point. Room was large bathroom was good and close to town for food or shopping. We booked with breakfast which was delivered to the room it was big and tasty. Would stay again if we travel this way again.

The Kingsgate was great during our recent extended stay while we were visiting family. The staff wee efficient and the top floor room (875) very comfortable and well heated which is especially important during winter. it accommodated my son, my wife and I very well.

Room Tip: Go to the top floor.

For a Millenium group hotel this place was a little disappointing. The rooms are large which I loved but they are tired and in need or an urgent revamp. Our room - which we booked as a twin and requested a Queen bed - had a twin and a Queen bed. The Queen bed was very worn out and should have been disposed of years ago. Just looking at it we could see it was in a state of collapse ... the centre dropped right in ... and simply sitting on its one side was very hard and uncomfortable. I couldn't imagine trying to sleep in it. The twin bed was slightly higher off the ground and much more comfortable looking, and we had to squeeze up tight together but had a lovely sleep nonetheless.

The "buffet breakfast" was again disappointing, and especially for a Millenium hotel. But the chef had pre-prepared fried eggs ... very unusual and never seen this before in N.Z. despite travelling and staying in many different hotels ... which he rested on slices of white bread under the lights (the oil being absorbed by the bread of course). The bacon was very tasty, but the range of foods available was very limited. Anyhow it was enough to "keep the wolf from the door" until lunch-time though we had hoped not to need to eat again before dinner.

Friendly staff at the front desk and we noticed most are elderly. With hubby and I both being over 60 we loved this and congratulate Millenium group for employing folks who want to work beyond the official retirement age of 65.

Would stay again but hoping they do a make-over before that happens.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a bed that is relatively new.

Was suggested to stay here but was a little disappointed. The whole hotel could do with a major update, it’s very tired. The beds aren’t the most comfortable, again you could tell they were old, one was fairly firm the other incredibly soft but both very uneven from lots of use over their lives. Couldn’t get the heating to work (heater broken) during a very cold week has to use all additional blankets.

Not usually a place I would go for dinner, but was quiet pleasantly surprised..
For a bar environment, quiet relaxing, food was great, and great to see the pool table is gone & replaced with tables for socialising & dining..
Well looked after by the bar staff both in drinks & the meals..
