Stayed at the Grand Mercure for one night. Nice large room and very reasonably priced. Reception/ staff were friendly and good place to have pre dinner drinks in the lounge/bar downstairs. Set in older part of town with heritage buildings and walked down to the local farmers market (Saturdays) for a g8 cup of coffee.

Went to Tasmania to do some wine tasting and tours for ideas for our business and stayed 3 nights here. Great rooms, large, clean, staff were friendly and really left you alone unless you needed something. Good place to stay and central to everything

Stayed here again for another work trip even though my preference was elsewhere. Cleanliness usually good and staff quite nice, but the place is getting old and tired. They have obviously started upgrading rooms, so hopefully that will improve things, as the location of the HGC is faultless (though the building is ugly).
One gripe I have is that if you book through Wotif, they no longer let a family of 4 book a room that always contains two double beds. But that was not this trip.
This time, my bed had a new mattress (I think there's a reason for that) and pillow so I slept well, but the decor is old, I couldn't open my window, and the bathroom was in need of repair.
I had a bath and a shower and both have issues. The bath is so shallow you can't actually cover much of you body with water. and the handle for disabled/getting out is rickety and loose so next to useless.
When I had a shower, the floor of the bath is very spongey so you feel like it's going to collapse under you, the tiles have been hastily repaired with slapped on grout and both taps pour water behind the plate and down the wall (but luckily back into the bath).
They have replaced the old TVs with flat screen ones so they can now get all free to air channels, but the remote was the same old one and the aspect ratio was wrong and I couldn't change it either with the remote or manually on the TV. Obviously this is less important for leisure travellers.
Overall it's okay but not at all classy.

We had a corner room which had been refurbished but keep the old world charm of the building. Staff were good and the bed comfortable. All in all a great place to stay.

NB: reading some of the other review it seems not all rooms have been done up and although not a personal experience may do to check this point with staff.
