Description: “Tasmanian Beef Specialist” Located in the historic art deco Luck’s Butchery shop in Launceston, Tasmania, Black Cow showcases grass fed, free range, hormone free, dry aged, premium Tasmanian beef including brands from Cape Grim, Greenhams, Clover Country, King Island and Flinders Island amongst others. Legislation in Tasmania against the use of hormone growth promotants and antibiotics in red meat production combined with Tasmanian graziers’ focus on free-range grass fed cattle produces happy animals and superior quality meat. A flexible pricing structure and side dishes designed around fresh, local produce allow guests to create the dining experience they desire. Also sporting a well-priced wine list with a heavy emphasis on local Tasmanian wines with some full-bodied reds thrown in for good measure. An energetic atmosphere and friendly professional service completes the Black Cow offering. This casual Bistro style has been a hit with the local community as well as visitors so reservations are essential. A private wine room offers dining for up to 12 guests for those important dinners and negotiations. Open 7 nights a week from 5:30pm to late. The Black Cow logo has been inspired by the amazing ancient artworks in the Lascaux Caves in France. Carbon dating indicates that these paintings are more than 17,000 years old. Black Cow, the name, is a tribute to the Bos Genus… Historically the cow has been important to many cultures. It has been seen and worshiped as a symbol of contentedness, fecundity, the passive yet creative and generative powers of nature, patience, nourishment, abundance, fertility and equifinality. It is also, of course, an excellent source of protein.

We had walked by this restaurant 3 nights in a row and it seemed always busy. We already had reservations for Friday so, it was good to see how busy it was. This place is rated #1 on TA so, I expected a lot. First, the waitstaff varied from really good to just OK. First, the menu was explained by a French gal that we had a hard time understanding. We then had a waitress who was just not friendly ...then an Asian gal who was really good. Our steak was good...just right. It arrived already cut up for the two of us with the bone laying along side that I eventually cut the last bit off. We both had sweet potato side that was good except for a lemon sauce over it which we swiped off...not sure why the chef thought that was good as it really took away from the steak. The cabernet from Warloon was really good and I really recommend it as it stood up to the steak for flavor and wasn't lost. I would go back...

If you like quality meat, well prepared and cooked.
Imaginative side dishes, topped off with a good desert selection.
This is your fine dining or special occasion location.
Prices are reflective of the standard of food and service.

Both the steaks and prices are eye watering. Cheapest wine was about 50 au$. But the steaks were indeed excellent and the staff knowledgable and polite.

We came here on our last night at Tassie and the place is full house (it was a Friday night so not surprised!). Glad we made a booking!

We both ordered a beef tartare and a char-grilled calamari as starters. The beef tartare was a fushion with some korean kimchi feel to it! Surprisingly good and the beef was flavourful! Calamari was totally spot on!

Highlight of the night was definitely was the wagyu rump (450g) shared among us. It was beefy, tender, juicy! Amazing!

We treated ourselves to this restaurant for our last night in Tasmania. While my husband is a meat lover - I generally don't eat a great deal of red meat - if I could eat meat like this every day that would be different! We started by sharing the tartare, followed by the share Wagyu with sides of beetroot & mushrooms, and finished sharing the creme brûlée - accompanied by a couple of drinks each - the bill came to $220 - more than what we would spend on a normal night out but certainly worth every dollar. The staff were friendly and attentive. Bookings are a must - while they tried to accomodate every one who walked through the door - most were told they would have to wait 1-2 hours for a table. If you are looking to treat yourself with a gorgeous dinner in Launceston - the Black Cow Bistro is your place!
