Good location but won’t be back.

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 Jan 2023via mobile
The location of the hotel was very good and the building looked very impressive from the outside but not so inside. There was no lift to get to the first floor, only a luggage lift which would not suit disabled guests - I have painful knees and struggled with the stairs.

The carpet in my room was dirty and overdue for replacement and the sash windows would not lock - one lock was missing and the other had been painted over and would not move. Both windows opened but not good from a security issue.

The TV was very small and old - it only had a SCART socket so I could not plug in my HDMI Fire Stick.

The bathroom could do with updating but the water pressure in the shower was good.

Was not happy to discover most of the hotel has been let to fruit pickers or meat factory workers from overseas, all on four year contracts. Apparently nine rooms are for tourists.

The laundry needed attention - not very clean and two of the tumble dryers (charge of $2 per session) were faulty - one with no door and another which stopped working mid-cycle leaving all my washing damp (refund given though). More power sockets are needed in there.

Stayed four nights and requested clean towels after three nights but didn’t get any - apparently a communication breakdown.

Good to be able to park free of charge.

Room Tip: Car park is free but limited spaces and not suitable for very large vehicles.

A long term labourers hotel with pick up buses idling outside the window from 4am onwards. definitely not for tourists. worn down, needs maintenance, too expensive for what you're getting in the area.

Our stay in the Twin room for 2 nights was delightful. John greeted us on arrival at 12.10pm, after I phoned about check in & John advised our room was ready. Our Twin room had a Queen bed plus a Single bed, was quite roomy for us, with lovely full pillows & a comfy pillow top add on, on top of the mattress, to give a great night sleep. We loved the Post Office clock chimes, added to the experience of staying at the 'Cornwall'. With the window shut & split system fan on, we didn't notice the chimes through the night. The bathroom was functional, with the shower over the bathtub which was enjoyed also. There are 5 domestic washing machines for complimentary guest use, & just $2 to use 1 of 3 dryers for 30 mins, ample time to dry a load. The communal kitchen is very large, with multiple stoves, microwaves, dining tables & chairs, washing up station & even a well loved pool table to have a fun game after dinner. The 'Cornwall' is in a fabulous location, with an easy walk to Brisbane Street Mall & downtown locations. Suburban Metro buses are readily accessible, & we saw the free Tiger bus service around the city, though we didn't get to utilise it during our stay. Thank you John & your team, we would certainly stay again!

The linen is clean, bed comfortable, it's walking distance to town and there's a nice cafe next door. Given those points it's good value for money. The staff are helpful and the washing machines are free. However if you're put off by older carpets and worn furniture that could do with updating then this isn't for you. For me it was fine and I loved having the cultural diversity around me...beautiful singing on Wednesday evening as the Fijian men staying there held their church service in the communal kitchen/dining area.

This historic hotel is well positioned to parks, shops and information centre. The staff were very helpful and informative. The washing machines were free. The carpet in my room was extremely well worn and stained. The mattress was extremely badly stained and there was no mattress protector. The room hadn't had a thorough clean in ages. The cafe next door was convenient for breakfast.

We had 3 rooms booked for a 2 night stay from 1st November which we booked through Booking.com. We checked into the Cornwall Hotel approximately 3.30pm on the 1st November. Upon arrival we were greeted by a pleasant staff member which gave us our keys.
We all went to our rooms & were all very disappointed upon entering.
The smell of filthy stained carpet , very tired & marked Furniture & the bathroom was appalling.
Mould on the walls & stains that look like vomit & urine up the walls .
The stainless steel shower was like a men’s urinal & was also dirty. Nothing like the pictures on the advertising.
Why we didn’t just leave right then & there I don’t know.
Looking for a positive I guess & hoping things would get better .
We stayed in our room for approximately 1 hour before venturing out for a walk to the park followed by dinner together .
We returned to the hotel at approximately 9pm . We climbed into bed shortly after & were hearing constant doors opening & closing , lots of people talking in the corridors so it was very hard to relax.
Around 9.30pm very loud Alarms were going off in the corridor & the yelling & shouting began.
I opened the door to see many people running down the corridors & unsavoury people yelling and swearing up & down the hall. These people were Caucasian males.
This was the final straw . We got changed ,packed our bags along with our family members & went down stairs . Where we were greeted by the fire brigade & a lot of chaos, no sign of any staff at all .
We went outside where we stood for the next 15 minutes or so & still no staff .
No direction , no evacuation plan , nothing . We made the decision to leave the keys in the lock box on the counter.
As I was waiting for my husband to bring the car to the front of the hotel to load all our luggage I saw a man behind the counter through the window from outside. I went in & asked if he was the manager in which he responded yes.
I proceeded to tell him we were checking out as we were not happy with our rooms & what we had witnessed in the 1 1/2 hours of our stay there.
We felt unsafe & the rooms were just filthy as well as people yelling obscenities in the corridors . He proceeded to yell at me & asked me what room numbers I had & made me feel very uncomfortable . I told him the keys were put in the box there & that we had three rooms .
He moved to the front of the counter & in my face telling me I was racist & proceeded to yell at me & inciting what I believe may have been workers living in the building sitting in the foyer by saying I hated them & was racist ! This was so wrong!
He was out of control and very rude.
He asked what’s wrong with the room. I started telling him & he wanted me to show him.
I followed him along with my elderly father up the stairs & down the corridor where he continued to yell & scream to people in the corridors that I hated them & was racist which I replied , “How dare you say that, I’ve never said such things.”
I started videoing him for my protection because I felt unsafe.
We got to the room & he turned towards me & snatched my phone off me in an aggressive manner. I demanded he give it back and he threw it at me. I can send this video to you.
I said I am calling the police & he turned again & stormed off back downstairs. He threatened he was going to call police which I said please do.

We left after he told my father and I to “get out”. We waited to see if the police were attending. We spoke with the fire brigade officers who witnessed some of this “manager’s” behaviour. They told us they get called there often and told us they sympathise with us.
We stayed in another hotel & so glad we did , a complaint has been lodged with the hotel chain for his aggressive & abusive behaviour & false accusations !!!
