My wife and I, in our 70's, stayed in Room 108 last Saturday night 18/3/2023. We were travelling back home to Brisbane from Hobart, and were pre-booked to stay at the Young Colonial Motel and The Stockman's Motel in Tamworth. However Young was going to experience 36 degrees and Tamworth 37 degrees, so we decided to change our route to staying in Yass on the 17/3/2023, then Port Macquarie on Sat 18//3/2023. So it was a late booking, the day before from memory.
In arriving at the Macquarie Barracks Desk to pick up the key we asked to pay immediately, but the manager uttered - "I've already put your payment thru early this morning, I don't fart about with those!" Our reply "Well ok!" The manager gave us a single sheet map to assist us in finding the room, but his scribble didn't quite explain exactly where it was, but a couple of guest on the way directed around a corner and up a flight of stairs. This room 108 was no where near the car park. Hence lugging suit cases the whole way and upstairs. we were very tired at this stage.
A quick look around and a trial sitting on the bed showed we had picked a dud and the motel was booked out. Our review before booking was not extensive enough and the photos displayed on their website were very deceptive.
!. The bed was a shocker, the mattress sunk so low, the springs inside could be felt, we contemplated pulling the bedding off and slipping on the floor! But we were scared of exposing the dreadful mattress underneath. The room was tiny and seemed about 40 years old, exposed brick walls, etc. When we settled onto the bed we felt a stuffy clammy feeling from the bedding.
2. The air conditioner was stuck down a narrow alley and needed a higher fan speed to get the air to reach bed area. It was about 30 years old with parts missing that directed the air through the room.
3. The bathroom exhaust fan sounded like a jet taking off, we left it off, and luckily there was a mirror light. The shower recess was smitten with mould and generally needed an exhaustive clean. The mirror itself had rust through the bottom half of it. The very old toilet suite had a brand new slow-descending toilet seat!
4. There was only one very old rusty bed lamp in this "Queen bed" room.
5. The whole room looked dingy, dated, and badly in need of a complete update and renovation.
6. The following morning we had courteous friendly chat with the Manager explaining our grievances to him, and pointed out that in fairness to future guests, we would have to write a review. His reply was " I would prefer that as I can then present these written reviews to the New Owners.
Finally, we felt that it would be worth speaking to the Port Macquarie Council Health Department about the state of this room. We felt we were taken advantage of, and definitely overcharged for the state of this room. We would never stay there again because we felt it was unethical of the owner to hire out such a room.
