Mercure Resort Hunter Valley Gardens
Ranked #7 of 15 Hotels in Pokolbin

Reception warm if slightly inefficient: key was not registered correctly, requiring a second visit to reception.

Room: furnishings adequate but tired. Carpet buckled, curtains off the hooks, headboard bolted to wall and dusty. Information book (loose-leaf) in bad shape, pages stained and crushed. Mini Bar price list missing. There is a mini-settee in the room. but it would have been nice to have a second occasional chair apart from the chair at the writing desk. Bedlinen good quality and spotless, but "fancy" decorator pillow had stained back. Mattress hard and pillows a bit lumpy.

Bathroom: appears to have been recently updated to designer standard. Good supplies of amenities (shampoo, conditioner, soaps, etc.) and fluffy towels. Bath is sunken type, probably not ideal for people over a certain age range. No handrails in either shower or bath. Day light falling through the clear glass flat sky light is a nice touch (the idea being, I suppose, that one lies in the bath and watches the stars), but it also highlights the cobwebs under the ceiling and the need for the more than occasional clean of the glass from outside. Inadequate towel rails. This is very important if guest want to reuse their towels but have no space hang them to dry.

General: Aircon quite noisy. Conversations and noise from other rooms and outside can be overheard. Little touches missing, ie only one wine glass, only one beside lamp, (not of the reading kind), “attached” coat hangers. Problems with wireless connection required repeated calls to reception.

Plus: Nice outside sitting area, quite secluded and private. Lovely, well-kept gardens. Breakfast: Buffet type, generous, tasty, good selection of cold and hot dishes. Staff very friendly.

Normally I would overlook some of the defaults, such as the $4 charge for 15 minutes wireless time, but at close to $600 for two nights, and considering the hotel is part of a major chain, I find this unacceptable.

We have stayed here 2 times and really recommend this as a place to stay. Close to all the great wineries in the Hunter. Really fine dining in the restaurant - but Oh! the breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Coffee machine can really ruin great coffee and the scrambles eggs and bacon - what did they do to them. Toasters work sometimes if the plug hasn't fallen out. Hasn't improved since our last visit but you can ask for bacon that is cooked not warmed and you can get great poached eggs - if you ask. Rooms are great ideal size for 2 people and a very comfortable king bed. Suggest you try Drayton's winery for your moring coffee - only about 3 km away but worth the drive and they open at 7.30am. Staff are pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: Select the Studio King rooms - cost a little more but well worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to review.

We have been addressing our breakfasts and toasters and we are in the process of sourcing a new coffee machine (the machine we currently have is from our supplier). We do have different egg types available when you ask the waitstaff, as you can understand we do not have the resources to leave all egg types on the buffet.

Thank you for the comments regarding the rooms, we do look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel again.

Kind regards,

Lauren Johns

Stayed here again this weekend - 7 years after l got married here and still love it all these years later. The rooms are really lovely and comfortable. We stayed in 603 and it had a window over the deep set tub which was really nice. The bed was huge, a little hard for me, but lovely. But what sets this place apart is the grounds and lobby area. Just beautiful The manicured lawns and hedges are stunning and the library/bar area is fantastic. The spa was on ready for a dip.

The location is the best of all accommodation in the area, close to the gardens village where you can get great food and only a short walk from the resort which is great for kids.

One thing tho, the bridal suite hasnt been updated since l stayed in their 7 years ago which is a shame. Its such a huge room but needs a little updating. I love this place and will continue to return.

Room Tip: get the larger rooms which has a window over the bath, feel spa-esque!
