We decided to go to the Hunter Valley recently, unfortunately we forgot it was a long weekend (Kings Birthday) after franticly looking for somewhere to stay and as we only wanted to stay the Saturday night finding somewhere was proving a real challenge, then we came across Elfin Hill, well what a find, lucky for us they had a room available for one night.
On arriving we were greeted by a lovely lady named Marie who is one of the owners along with her husband Mark, after being shown to our room and told about all the amenities we were left to settle in to our cosy room complete with a balcony which offered us a wonderful view of the surrounding bushland. After unpacking a few things we decided to walk down to the amenities area (bottle of wine in hand) which had a fireplace and comfortable lounges as well as a full professional kitchen and a laundry, there was also tables out in the open or on an undercover verandah, we opened our bottle of wine and settled in to watch the sun slowly setting, it was absolutely beautiful.
While we were admiring the sunset Mark and Marie came by to set up the outdoor fireplace complete with table lighting and comfy chairs, having not been to the Hunter before we asked Marie did she have any suggestions regarding the local Restaurant options available, after giving us some suggestions we managed to get a last minute booking at The Wood Restaurant at the Brokenwood Wines complex (a little bit further away than some other nice local restuarants that were booked out), as we wanted to enjoy some of the local wine at dinner we organised an Uber for both ways (note : Ubers are more common weekends than weekdays) I have to say that the Restaurant although casual the food was excellent (2 course or 3 course options) and so was the Pinot Gris.
On arriving back to Elfin Hill we again ventured down to the amenities area with some remaining wine from the afternoon and was greeted by this lovely fire raging away, we sat down in the comfy chairs close to the fire and just talked about what a wonderful time we were having, Marie and Mark arrived on their rounds and after some coaxing we managed to get them to sit down and have a chat, Mark disappeared for a minute and came back with a glass of Red, well for the next hour we were treated to some wonderful stories by this adventurous couple who were to our surprise very experienced world travellers, after finishing up we said goodnight and went back to our warm Air conditioned room.
On waking the next morning and after organising the night before to have Breakfast in the sunshine rather than in our room we wandered down to the amenities area, Marie treated us to a beautiful continental breakfast including home made jam (a cooked breakfast is also available) we listened to the bird life and just could not believe what a great place we had stumbled on, after breakfast it was time to pack up and off to some vineyards, we will certainly be visiting Mark and Marie at Elfin Hill again.

Room tip: Book your acommodation, Uber or Taxi, Restaurants or any activities in advance to allow more options

Hey, It was so neat to have you both here and what an enjoyable night we had around the fire pit. We very much look forward to sharing some more wine and good laughs. Thanks so much for your wonderful review and for being 5 star guests. We hope to see you again soon.

At over $400/night you would expect something special, and then be bitterly disappointed. If there would be additional charges on your card after you’ve paid in full, you would assume written or verbal advanced notice, wrong again. Please learn some basic communication skills to avoid our horrendous experience happening to others.

Michael booked with Airbnb to stay with us. He booked for 2 adults and 2 children in August last year to stay in April this year. So, yes, communication is king, Michael. You had 9 months to communicate with me that you actually had 4 adults and 1 child. On your arrival, I communicated with you personally about this situation and I communicated with you about the extra charge. I gave you extra bedding and towels, etc, and I topped up all that was required for a 5th guest within the cottage. I never saw you again Michael, and even when taking your breakfast on both mornings to the cottage, you were nowhere to be seen. On check in I gave to your adult daughter a guest registration form and communicated to her the requirement for it to be completed, especially the credit card details. I communicated this again on three other occasions, and on each occasion, you ignored me. You left without saying goodbye, just left without any communication. I telephoned you and you told me you had a lovely enjoyable stay, and finally gave me your credit card details without hesitation. I took the payment for the extra guest, as per Airbnb policy for extra guests staying. Later you advised, by email, you would give me a "good" review if I refunded the money. I (correctly) assumed that your offer included the implied threat of a bad review if declined the offer. So, no surprises here! You were disrespectful in the state that you left the cottage, and in fact it was disgusting. I'm unsure what your horrendous experience was other than that I took payment for a guest that you had no intention of paying for.

I felt at home. Friendly hosts. Very clean and a pleasure to stay. Nothing too much for our hosts. Get the cooked breakfast - very delicious and cooked to perfection. The property is nice to stroll around as well.

Room tip: Book directly. Cheaper and free continental brekkie included.

To Marie & Mark,
After driving up from Melbourne for a wedding, to see and experience Elfin Hill was so inviting.
Our Stay in "The Loft" was fantastic.
Your attention to us and other guests was amazing and your property and amenities and breakfasts is a credit to you both.
Nothing was too much trouble.
Your friendly smiles and chats each day made us feel at home and able to totally unwind.
We hope you get many more visitors and have a full calendar.
Your thoughtfulness and care to all with the wild Saturday night storm taking out the power and water and Mark meeting us at the carpark at 11pm with torches to help us in the dark safely, supplying torches and lanterns for the room and you bringing fresh chilled water was just another little edge over other places we have stayed and showed you care about your guests.
Wonderful experience
The views, birds and wildlife from the decks and rooms was just so calming and relaxing.
Recommend this property to everyone.
Credit to you both and being a family site not treated as a business was a plus.
Best Wishes

Ian & Jane
