Mandelson's of Goulburn
Ranked #1 of 7 Goulburn B&B and Inns
Reviewed 4 May 2015

If you are into history, this is a must. And Goulburn is a must place to stop. We were contemplating staying at Canberra for the night, then decided a small country town would be easier and quicker - so glad we selected Goulburn. It is obvious that Steve & Claire are enthusiastic about their Mandelson's - it is like walking into a different world. Our room was a good size & very comfortable with a modern ensuite. A Continental Breakfast is served in the large Dining room - & most adequate to send you on your way for the day.
There is tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but no fridge - however you can store any 'çold' goods in a kitchen fridge.
We will certainly be back & for a longer stay.

Room Tip: if you dont like stairs, request a ground floor room

Definitely going via Goulburn and staying here again! We were searching high and low at the last minute and so glad we found this beautiful place. Amazing value for such nice rooms with modern ensuite. Really tastefully/no-expense-spared restored historic beautique hotel. Breakfast served in a lovely dinning room downstairs. Played the piano upstairs in the ballroom! (sounds a bit like Cludo) Service was great, easy going and very friendly and we discovered a whole lot of history about the hotel and area. We'll be back!

Just spent a night in room 11 on the 3rd floor, and it was delightful. Four windows in a room is my idea of heaven - we had them all open all night and the breeze blew through most refreshingly. We pulled the comfy armchairs up to one window to enjoy the evening scene and a glass of red before dinner, and regretted we weren't able to stay another night. This place is really nice - the owners love their old furniture, some really choice pieces of costume, glass etc, and the history of this very old establishment. The ballroom on the first floor of the main building is magnificent - it doesn't make the owners any money (I presume!) but it's a wonderfully preserved piece of local history. I felt like we got a special glimpse of early Australian history in this once-grand inland city. Thanks to the owners' helpful advice this morning, we had a great day visiting the war memorial on top of the hill, the steam-driven waterworks, and also Hovell's grave in the Anglican cemetery, the derelict St John's Home for Orphan Boys, and some other interesting nooks and crannies, finishing with a refreshing swim in the 60s Olympic Pool! The only thing we didn't find satisfying in our two-day trip to Goulburn was dinner options last night - maybe Sunday is a bad day, but one pub, Tattersalls, looked uninspiring and the other one, the Astor, served stodge. Oh, we also recommend the terrific second-hand bookshop just down the street from the hotel, in the old police station (complete with cells) - a fantastic collection!

Room Tip: Room 11 has lots of windows and light, and quite nice views of Goulburn's hills.

What a wonderful building which is furnished and decorated with style.Steve and Claire are great hosts and obviously love their role.Rooms are very clean and comfortable and breakfast is excellent.nothing is too much trouble for the hosts. An added bonus is the batik fabrics to admire and purchase. This is a place that I look forward to returning on my next trip 'down under'.

This charming discovery offers all the modern day comforts in a wonderfully preserved historical setting with truly wonderful hosts Steve and Clair. Excellently located and a short stroll to surprisingly good eateries and places of historic interest. While any discerning traveller could not help but love this very special gem, it offers a very special bonus to quilters (which my wife happens to be), as this is probably the only B & B in Australia if not the world that doubles as a quilters "Mecca". Clair imports possibly the largest range of batiks available in Australia, all at one price - currently $15/meter. So good, we have returned just for the fabric.
