From the moment the door was opened to welcome us to The Callie, by our friendly host Hugh, we were thrilled that we had selected The Caledonian for our 5 night stay in Broken Hill. Our twin room was warm, quiet and conveniently positioned across from the bathroom. The beds was so comfortable and the linen crispy clean.
Hugh and Barb were wonderful hosts making sure that our visit to Broken Hill was memorable and enjoyable They were almost upstaged by Pierre and Jacques their friendly and sweet poodles. A home away from home. There was one problem and that was the endless supply of tasty Anzac biscuits. The scales when I returned home informed me that I may have eaten too many. Hugh's tourist guide suggestions were very helpful. Our holiday in Broken Hill was so interesting and enjoyable. So much to see and do. Do not miss Margaret's tasty meals at the Silverton Café especially if you are gluten intolerant, a large menu to choose from. Another must see is the Big Picture breathtaking. Ellie and Susan.

In early July, we stayed 3 nights at the Callie.

It was for my wife and I, our first visit to Broken Hill and we were very impressed with what the city has to offer. So much to see and do, from the art activities to a very nice golf course. However, this review is about the Callie B&B.

Our hosts, Pierre and Jacques, made us very welcome and even gave us an escort to our room. Their staff, Barb and Hugh run the B&B very well under P&J's supervision.

The port is on the side-board to help overcome the chill of the short walk from an evening dining nearby. Hugh's Anzac biscuits with copious cups of tea were most welcome.

Our room although not particularly large was very comfortable and being July, the reverse cycle air conditioner quickly warmed up the room. The ensuite was something else again. Spacious and appointed with a shower come spar. The toilet has an electronic bidet, which Barb explained, was generally used is hospitals and aged care facilities to assist those needing such assistance. Now, you might think is this necessary? Well, let me tell you, on a cold Broken Hill night and you need to make a call of nature, the warm seat is very welcomed!

The breakfast is a very good continental, with a wide choice of cereals, breads for toast, yogurt and fresh fruits. If needed, Hugh will cook any number of hot courses. We didn't see the need.

Deliberately, the Callie is set up to provide a relaxed atmosphere. It's like being at home - clean and comfortable. You can spread yourself out, sipping port and watching TV. Plenty of newspapers to browse.

We did not want to leave the car on the street as we had golf clubs in them, so we were able to secure the car in the backyard. Peace of mind.

No hesitation in recommending the Caledonian B&B.

Oh, did I mention that Pierre and Jacques as a pair of very delightful poodles? (Standard and miniature)

Thanks WestbrookeMelbouurne for your perceptive review which made Barb and I chuckle. The concept of us being well trained by Pierre and Jacques (our Poodles) made us think. "Is it true? - are we responding to the dogs or is it the other way round?" We are proud of our 'Garden Room' and you have described it well - I think that at this time of year there is nothing more luxurious than wrapping your self in one of our huge bath sheets that has been on the towel warmer!!! We try to make people feel 'at home' without being 'in their face' and do our best to share local knowledge to help our guests get the most out their stay. Once again thanks and cheers for now - Hugh and Barb

Thanks Oyher for your perceptive review - I think you have identified the 'something special' that Barb is able to create in our accommodation. Homely sums it up perfectly. Thanks for mentioning the Anzacs - I fill the huge container just about every week. The guests are encouraged to help themselves at any time!! Thanks for staying with us - hope to see you again - Cheers Hugh and Barb

We were in town for a special family birthday and my aunt was staying here. We thought we would join her for breakfast one morning as it sounded so quaint. What a warm welcome and beautiful home cooked hearty breakfast. I particularly enjoyed the home made marmalade and perfectly made cappuccino. We felt so welcome and settled in around the long table and the warmth of the room and chatted for hours. Will definitely stay here next time. Thank you Barb and Hugh for making a couple of drop in so welcome.

Thanks Sharon T for your positive review - The long breakfast table is a convivial place to be. There is a benefit in being able to supply home made fare - particularly if you like marmalades - the lime marmalade has a real citrus zing!!!! When you get positive feed back it is so rewarding and inspires us to try even harder - Thanks and Cheers Hugh and Barb

My husband and I were welcomed warmly by Hugh when we arrived. We stayed two nights in the garden room. We found the room a bit chilly, with quite a draft coming from the window. We were nice and cozy at night though, thanks to the electric blanket! The room was not spotless, but clean. The included Australian breakfast was not extravagant, but enough. My husband enjoyed his free latte made by Hugh, for mentioning Trip Advisor. We also enjoyed Hugh's anzac biscuits dipped in tea. If you're looking for a friendly place to stay and don't mind spending some time visiting with others during breakfast, this is the place for you!

Thanks Johanna for your review - sorry you found the room chilly (It is winter in Broken Hill) but the easy way to fix that is to close the window and turn the reverse cycle air conditioning unit on!!
We do our best to ensure our guests comfort!
We also try to encourage our guests to enjoy each others company - hence the huge table in the dining room. We introduce each to the other by Christian name and stimulate conversation. Thank you so much for staying with us - Cheers Hugh and Barb
