Sofitel Queenstown - Home Away From Home!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 Apr 2024
We enjoyed staying at this hotel so much because the staff are so friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and attend to your every need.

I loved it so much that I would love to live there when I retire! The staff who work in The Left Bank, Le Salon Rouge, reception and concierge service were amazing! They really make the atmosphere of the place. We have stayed at a number of Sofitel hotels and this by far is the best!

Rooms were very clean and comfortable as was the bed.

We ate breakfast at the Left Bank which has a great range of buffet food as well as a wide selection on the a la carte menu. Each morning we were greeted by the friendly staff who remembered our names and preferences. It was like coming down to breakfast with family. We felt very welcome.

If you book a suite at the hotel, of an afternoon you can enjoy drinks and a small selection of canapes from Le Club Lounge Apero Chic menu in Le Salon Rouge between 1700-1900. This was included in our package as we booked a suite and it is also available to Platinum or Diamond Accor Plus members.

The hotel is centrally located and the valet service is great. It would take only minutes for the concierge to bring out our car. It was reasonably priced at $50 per day, however, we were charged only $30 per day as a room upgrade was not available to us. (This is also part of Accor Plus Platinum membership.)

I highly recommend this hotel. It really is the best!

Very nice hotel with friendly staff in the heart of Queenstown. Room was large and looked out onto the town. Some mountain and limited lake views. The meals we had were good. The bike shop next door was great and access to all the restaurants and shops nice.

Exceptional service from the moment you step into their fine hotel. The location is just off the center of town and a short two block walk to the gondola. Its location is central but very quiet. The service is impeccable and a special thanks to Mr Guillarme (Mr. G) in reception and Mr Nacho in the Left Bank Cafe. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and quiet. The beds were comfy and the bathroom was spectacular including the spa bathtub big enough for two. We hope to return very soon.

Room tip: Limited parking within the town center.

This hotel is in the perfect location to walk to everything in Queenstown. We reserved a Superior Spa Room. The suite was huge with a beautiful bathroom, thick towels and bathrobes, huge soaking tub (though the jets did not work), large shower with dual shower heads, nice smelling toiletries, nice slippers, coffee maker, nice tea selection, mini fridge with free, non-alcoholic drinks, a few snacks, chocolate at turn-down, two balconies, and a beautiful view. During tea time each afternoon the chef sent out absolutely delicious snack bites. We couldn’t wait for the next day to see what he would make for us. He was very creative. I do have many suggestions that would make this hotel top-notch vs. just very good: the room decor was drab and bland. The carpet and furniture were worn, the curtains were falling off the rod, the air conditioner wouldn’t stay set on our desired temperature, the lighting was poor, the bed was not comfortable, there was very little artwork, and there were very few plugs in the bedroom. We paid for a Clubroom and were told about afternoon tea from 3-5 pm but we weren’t told about happy hour. We arrived at 5pm one afternoon and were given a happy hour menu. We had no idea this was an amenity that we had already paid for in our package rate. This was irritating. One day during teatime we were offered six different teas whereas the previous two days we were only offered four. Apparently there was always six. Breakfast was included in our room rate. It was the same food items every day with very little variation (cut fruit differed). This got very boring. We could order off the menu too so one day I ordered the porridge. It was very runny. The side of smoked salmon was tasty but only included one small piece of salmon. I called the concierge one morning, looking for recommendations about an activity since ours was canceled due to weather. I had found the place online and asked her if it was a company that the hotel recommended. She said she would call the company to see if they had availability (I saw that they did online) but she never called me back. It was a waste of time to call downstairs. Little details like these unfortunately make this hotel more average than it should be, especially for a Sofitel. It really needs a facelift.

We stayed at the Sofitel for 6 nights and loved it. We hated to leave! It is perfectly situated in Queenstown to be able to walk to everything. They serve small plates and drinks from 5 to 7:00 p.m. which are delicious. The breakfasts are very good especially the eggs Benedict. And the service throughout the hotel is A+.

We choose Sofitel before the start of Routeburn trek is because is the only hotel has a gym and is directly opposite Ultimate hikes meeting point. Front desk staff French guy was very nice to check us in. Room is good size and functional. I like the fact we can help ourselves to the mini bar snacks and they top up daily + all the non-alcoholic beverages. I love their Happy hour lounge 5-7pm. They have canapés and selection of wine, sparkling and cocktail (cocktail I wish they can revamp as only 3 and not great). Gym 24hrs is a super plus however they really need to revamp the gym equipments (super old) except the 2 treadmill.

Ok why no 5 star?

Gym has to revamp.
Their breakfast is not great. You can have a semi-buffet that's like those 3 star hotel you get with bake beans, mushroom, bacon in the hot metal holder + order ONE egg/pancake from the menu. I only need eggs daily. 2 days in a row, I need to wait at least 45min. to get it delivered. 2nd day I thought I was smarter and came down at 8am and ordered immediately, waited and by 840 I ask the lady who took my order where're my eggs? She said they've sent it to the other table. So I've to wait again.
I'm sure they must get a handful of people who stay in Sofitel for Routeburn trek which has to gather at 6:15am sharp. I ask them if they can be so kind to get me 2 eggs at 545am as my partner is Gluten free, he can't eat their sandwich. The Asian guy at front desk was quite haughty in his response and simply said not possible. The French guy who checked us in overhear him and came to my rescue. Said he'll speak to chef and see what he can do. Next day I ask the front desk again if they'll assist us on the breakfast at 5:45am. She said she'll look into it and call us that night. Nothing happen after. I gave up.
