“Very, very well-run and central.”
Reviewed 12 February 2012

Personally, I'm most fond of hostels with character. But sometimes (and especially when you're in a city/town) it's nice to find a well-run place to stay where everything's proper. And that's AQ Hostel for you.

It's very recently refurnished, so everything is nice, clean and in good shape. It's not luxurious, just proper and tidy. They're a bit more expensive than others, but bear in mind that they're located smack-bang in the middle of town (even though Queenstown isn't large, it's one of the most expensive places in NZ when it comes to apartments etc.), and it really IS ship-shape in all ways. And to my delight, I discovered that they've changed the 6-bed dorms into 4-beds; that extra space makes it a lot easier to pay those extra dollars.

The staff is also a pleasant bunch, and from what I could gather it's because the owner goes the extra mile to ensure that they like working there. It's working, and the result is a place where you can relax and never feel like there's too little space on too many guests.

Oh, and the balcony is great for evening beers or a mid-day tan :)

Room Tip: Hot tip: If you're 4 friends, get the family room on top floor with balcony access.

I've been travelling for 6 months and this is the best hostel I've ever stayed at. I booked for 2 nights initially and extended it to 10 nights! The place is spotless, super clean. Plus you get free limited internet or wifi, free international calls and they do your washing for you! The lounge is great as is the kitchen and the beds are so comfortable. The rooms are clean and the bathrooms are great. A home away from home. I urge everyone to stay there!! Brett, Susie, Colin, the whole team are really friendly and will help you out with anything. I can't speak highly enough of this place. 10 out of 10!

Room Tip: Try to get the recently converted female only dorm - Vaughan's room, you get a balcony, TV and D...

This hostel was fantastic, lovely staff and well thought out rooms and facilities. Soap in the toilets, hooks, reading lights, 2 pillows and really clean! Oh, and names on the beds was a great touch to help with getting to know room mates.

The kitchen and lounge areas were really comfortable and sociable. I was there for thanksgiving and Brett cooked a fantastic dinner for us all. The place had a really great feel to it, I was disappointed to be leaving.

Tips: book the 4 bed ensuite as it's nice and spacious, the 6 bed is a bit cosy.
Book tours through the staff as it will cost you the same but they can then maybe get freebies. (think this was the case with Nzone skydiving).

Stayed here in Sept 2011 for 6 nights. Rooms were clean with new bathrooms, staff were friendly and very helpful with booking any activites we wanted. Great atmosphere between staff and the other people staying there. WiFi access, loan of chargers etc available, huge kitchen area. Would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: we stayed in a 4 room dorm

We stayed in one of the private rooms and were extremely impressed with the room, view, balcony access and extras like iPod dock and sky tv! Awesome, convenient location with great staff. While we only stayed for 2 nights, we could easily have stayed longer!
