Great Place to Stay
Awesome atmosphere, very friendly.
All the staff are very approachable and helpful with not only goings on at the lodge, but for directions, suggested activities and honest opinion on popular tours.
Comfy basic rooms... plenty of bathroom facilities and great common areas to relax, socialize and enjoy.
VERY close to main part of town just a 2 minute walk (good for after long nights on the town!)

Room Tip: Private Double room was great for a little privacy at a great price

I too was decieved by the images of the website. Hopelessly run down, rabbit warren of a place with many territorial backpacker residents who are grots. The two kitchens are a disgrace and whilst the mangers were helpful and enthusiastic - they too were backpackers themselves whose low standards of cleanliness set the tone. Not that anything can be done much to improve the place except perhaps a the expert use of a bulldozer.

The Lab isn't the cleanest hostel I've stayed in. The rooms aren't huge. These are small things that can be overlooked by both price and location alone. Add to that the staff are exteremly friendly and helpful. There seems to be quite a few long term stayers in the Lab who are more than willing to make new long and short term guests feel welcome.

This is definitely not the place to stay if you're used to the likes of Nomads. If however you want to stay somewhere that you're pulled into the fun then the Lab is the place to go.

It shows how opinions differ!
The Lab is a very homely hostel with a great crowd of longtermers who, unlike other clicky hostels, make you feel very welcome and instantly part of the group.
There's always a great craic, with people wanting to party every night but quieter places you can escape to with like-minded "chill out" types!
Yeah so it's not the cleanest hostel (think "messy" rather than "dirty"!) and there's no great swimming pool or over the top amenities but it is "budget accommodation" and there's bathrooms/kitchens which are cleaned daily.
The staff are amazing fun and do anything they can to help!
The location couldn't be more perfect for Queenstown (just on the outskirts of the main town centre and NOT up any crazy steep hills!) and the price is affordable.

I always stay in budget accommodation and I am usually very happy with the standard of New Zealand hostels, but this place was terrible. I was put off from the beginning as it looks much different from the nice, clean and modern pictures on the website. No character at all. Should have suspected as it was available in the peak season while most of the other places were sold out. We had stained sheets, an old bunk with some pieces missing from the base and dirty toilets and showers. The walls in our room were peeling off, they made no effort to make it look nice or inviting. There was writing under the bunks and it seems that most of the previous people hated it as well, things like " this place sucks" and " this is Norman bates hostel".
