Owner description: Operating out of Queenstown airport and flying across the Southern alps on one of the most spectacular short scenic flights in the world, Glenorchy Air is a family business owned and operated by Janet and Robert Rutherford. We operate daily fixed wing flights in which everyone has window seat for unimpeded views. These include fly-cruise-fly, overflight, helicopter and coach options into and out of Milford Sound and have been doing so for 20 years. Glenorchy Air run regular flights to the Mount Cook region, to Mount Aspiring, Queenstown's local glaciers, Stewart Island, Otago's East Coast and to Fiordlands Doubtful Sound. As we worked on the "Lord of the Rings" movies we have a unique insight into movie locations with various flightseeing options and personalised tours on offer.

Just back from NZ and had the pleasure of taking a trip to Milford Sound with Glenorchy Air. Ray our pilot was extremely professional and has a fantastic knowledge of the local areas and sights. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this trip.

“Absolutely Epic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 October 2011

We chose the Fly -> Kayak -> Fly trip to Milford. A pick up from Queenstown in the morning was organized for us as part of the fee. The skies were clear as could be and promised for an excellent flight. Ray took us to Milford in a Cessna 172 and the scenery was spectacular. Ray was very knowledgeable about the area and showed us a lot of points of interest as well as giving a lot of geological discussions. I'm a pilot myself and found the route through the mountains very interesting and the scenery was breathtaking. The flight into Milford provided an expansive view that one could only get from the air. The approach over the sound into the airport was definitely one to remember. Ray hooked us up with Rosco's Kayaks and we on our way into the sound.

We had such great weather with sunny, calm conditions that made our kayak trip with Rosco's simply amazing. Jimmy, our guide, took us on a four hour kayak trip around the sound, past waterfalls and sheer rock faces. Saw a lot of seals and other sea life. Just an amazing experience and not too physically demanding.

Ray was waiting to take us back to Queenstown in the Airvan. He took us on another amazing route through mountain passes, with glimpses of glacial lakes and waterfalls. The ride was smooth and the approach back into Queenstown over Lake Wakatipu was special.

The great weather and the friendly staff made for an epic trip that my friends and I will always remember for the rest of our lives. Choosing the flight option was more than saving seven hours of bus travel. It was an experience with stunning scenery that could be seen from the air. If you are an aviation buff or are looking for a spectacular adventure, I highly recommend it.

Cheers,
Ned

Wow, another great review about our Fly/Kayak/Fly tour to Milford Sound. We see it as the true Eco way to tour Milford Sound and are thrilled that this option will be available all this summer, for the first time. It was previously only offered in Winter. Thank you for taking the time to review this trip and we are thrilled that Ray could help make this tour more memorable.

“Great tour with stunning views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2011

This tour was the Lord of the Rings Tilogy Trail 1 by road, the guide/driver was very knowledgable, ended up high in the mountains (Coronet Peak), roads a bit scary! Stopped at various locations, walked off track, very interesting, stoipped for a look around and a coffee in Arrowtown for 45mins, was a trip worth doing even if you are not a huge fan of LOTR as the views are stunning.

Thank you for this great review of the Land Tour we offer for Lord of the Rings Fans. We also have two flights to remote film locations. As we were fortunate enough to fly cast and crew, during their 2 years filming the trilogy, we have lots of stories to share. Yes, the scenery is stunning and thank you for sharing your experience with others.

“"An amazing experience - one to tick off the "bucket list"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2011

Our decision to take a plane trip back from Milford Sound with pilot Ray was the highlight of our recent New Zealand trip. He was an excellent pilot and communicator and gave lively, interesting commentary throughout the trip. Ray explained in detail where we were and what he was doing while flying. I was a little nervous and this information was an excellent way to calm the nerves, he gave me the confidence to see that I was in safe hands. The views of the snowcapped mountains were just fantastic. There were four other passengers on the plane who had to be taken to the Blanket Bay resort which enabled us to also see this resort. This was another "bonus" of our plane trip. Flying into Queenstown that afternoon is an experience I am unlikely to forget. This was obviously more expensive than our morning bus trip to Milford Sound, however, it was worth every cent. You must try it!

This is a must do in Queenstown.

Ray the pilot was fantastic, the mountains amazing and Milford Sound was incredible at 1500 feet.
