“The guides are terrific!”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

Much has already been written about the Milford Track, which you could enjoy independently but then you would be missing out on the value that the guides provide! And while the entire organization works to make sure your experience is exceptional, the majority of your interaction is with the guides who are without exception personable, knowledgeable, conscientious and thorough in their work.
Each day begins the night before with a presentation explaining the next day's tramp - what birds and wildlife to look out for, what geologic terrain and formations you will see, and where to go swimming (if you're brave)! Then on the trail, they position themselves through the party to always be on hand and provide safety and security when needed and to answer your questions. In the lodges, at the end of the day, they are still on hand socializing. They are obviously very special, impressive people.
Last but not least, don't miss the hot chicken soup well timed and cheerfully served up at the top of McKinnon Pass. (Thank you, Masa!)

“Routeburn Magic”
Reviewed 7 January 2012

3 days of absolute heaven on the Routeburn. Jaw dropping scenery, excellent guides (Hilary and Laura) and great accommodtion. At the end we just wanted to turn around and walk it again back to the start.

“Wonderful Routeburn trek”
Reviewed 7 January 2012

The Routeburn doesn't need a lot of help to be magnificent, but Ultimate Hikes provides a well-organized, top end trekking experience. Lovely, modern lodges, very good food and knowledgeable, personable guides made it a great trek.

“Could be great, but scenery and hike amazing”
Reviewed 21 December 2011

Had a wonderful hike with some great guides, but the problem with this trip is the food and accommodation. Rooms are identical everywhere as they are all owned by the company and the beds are average, average pillows at best and rooms (we had an ensuite) just okay. Food is quite basic with a few exceptions. Breakfast is almost identical daily, with no changes in the meat, standard canned peaches ( yes I know this is remote, but they have a boat arriving daily with access to both Queenstown and Te Anau, and for the price charged a better breakfast should be standard, they don't even make their own granola), lunch buffet has good breads and meats but processed cookies (how tough is it to make fresh baked cookies and the smells in the lodges would be great), snacks on arrival are unimaginative, and dinners are generally the same steamed vegetables, meats almost always overcooked and tough. This may seem critical, but you do pay an awful lot for this trip, and compared to backcountry lodges in North America this is quite poor, they seem to have a captive market and little desire to do anymore than they absolutely have to, too bad, this could be so much more when combined with the stunning hike and eager guide staff. Lodge staff are non existent other than the delightful Judy and Dave in Pomplona, and you get the pleasure of being asked to scrape your own plates in Mitre Lodge, seriously?

“Milford Track Experience”
Reviewed 12 December 2011

Did the Ultimate Hikes 5 days/4 nights Milford Track hike. Borrowed their packs at no extra cost.
Briefing great, coach great, Tour guides and lodge staff excellent and they certainly work for their salary. Accommodation comfy and very clean. Could probably have forgone the luxury of a twin room and ensuite as apparently the bunk rooms were also very good. Standard of meals were good but could've been a bit better but there was plenty of food for lunches...we never went hungry. Even though it's quite an expensive initial outlay, the general consensus was we got value for money and would totally recommend the company and their staff. What an amazing country we live in.
