Budget stay in remote wilderness

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Jan 2013
We spent two nights at Milford Sound Lodge over the New Year. Potential guests should be aware that there have been some problems with rock falls/avalanches on the Milford road, which have resulted in a number of road closures over the past few months. Prior to our arrival we were contacted by the Lodge (which was much appreciated) to advise us of these issues / check that we still wanted to proceed with the booking (there being a high risk of becoming stuck at Milford for a period of time due to a road closure). In any case, we chose to travel, and needless to say, the road was closed for 2 days after we arrived due to torrential rain.
We stayed in a budget twin room located in the main lodge. Basically furnished with reasonably comfy beds, a side table and functional heater, the room is intended only as a place to retire for the night, which is expected for the price. Well maintained toilets/showers and a large shared kitchen (which does tend to get very crowded at peak times) are located close by. Unfortunately, the torrential rain we experienced during our stay caused some minor flooding in the kitchen and the dining room.
We were very impressed with the service provided by the front desk in what were hectic times over the first two days of our stay (500mm rain over two days, NYE, road closure related issues) – from assistance booking cruises / walks and providing a spare key after my husband inadvertently locked us out of our room on NYE! The only niggle we had was that the communication from the Lodge to guests on the morning of the third day, January 2nd (the day the road was expected to be re-opened) about the road closure was somewhat poor. While there was a small notice on the noticeboard by the front door at 7.30 am advising that a decision on the road opening that day was “pending”, we would have appreciated clear information from the front desk in regards to a) what time the next road update was expected to be provided and b) what guests should do in the meantime regarding check out. As there was no clear information, the (unfortunately very surly) woman at the front desk fielded continuous queries across the morning from people wondering what was going on. The prominent placement of a large notice from the Lodge outlining all available information/common questions is likely to have prevented this.
All in all, a good stay, recommended to enjoy the solitude of Milford after the day cruise crowds have departed. A tip – the Blue Duck Café/Bar is a great place to have a meal if you choose not to brave the crowds at dinner time in the kitchen. Meals are extremely well priced given the remoteness of the location, and a free drink voucher (upon purchase of a main meal) can be obtained from the Lodge front desk.

Hi Truffle Queen, thank you so much for posting such a detailed review. We are glad to hear your accommodation and stay was what you expected, although a little longer and we hope the interruption didn't affect your schedule too much. We will look into how we can more effectively communicate road conditions and updates to our guests as we often get road closures in the winter due to avalanche risk as well, so thank you for letting us know where we can improve. Regards, the Lodge Team

We stayed in a powered site at Milford Sound Lodge over New Year's Eve/Day. Despite the torrential rain and wind putting a dampener on our touristing plans, the Lodge was a great place to seek refuge, hang out in the warm lounge with a hot chocolate and generally make the most of relaxing time in the wilderness.

The sites are well located with gorgeous views - we had one facing the river and were treated to the amazing site of impromptu waterfalls down the mountains after the heavy rain. Facilities at the Lodge were great for what we needed - clean bathrooms/showers (and plenty of them), ample kitchen/dining room and cozy lounge. The shop stocked basics and the wifi was an expensive (understandably) but unexpected benefit - great to be able to keep semi-up-to-date with the world outside thanks to satellite internet.

Most importantly, the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, keeping us up to date about the road closure and weather over New Year's. Will definitely be back - gorgeous place to spend a few nights.

Hi, so glad you made the most of your time in Milford Sound, you are right it sure did rain over New Year but it was worse about 10 days after! However, that is Milford Sound and Fiordland and that is what makes it so special. You will be glad to hear we now have an operating cafe in our Lodge, so guests can enjoy that hot chocolate and a muffin or bit to eat now as well! Regards, the Lodge Team.

Perfect place to put up after the long drive up. Staff very friendly and helpful. Facilities were all clean and good dining area with an open view. Small outlet within the lobby for basic essentials. Lots of advise available at desk for further tours to be arranged such as cruise and flights.

Room tip: Great camper van parking nearby river.

The Lodge is a great place to stay, the accommodation is fairly basic, but extremely clean. What made a difference for us was the extremely helpful and friendly staff at the reception, in particular Nicolás and Paco and Anton, who did not hesitate to make calls for us or keep our luggage or provide the right type of advice. We would certainly go back to the lodge and recommend it for its service and friednliness. Thank you!!

Hi, thank you for taking the time to write a review. Really happy you had a great experience with our staff, the three boys mentioned received a pat on the back for a job well done and a thank you box of beer each to enjoy on a nice hot summer night! We absolutely value and feel proud of our staff and the way they interact with our guests, so thank you for giving us an excuse to reward them! Regards, the Lodge Team.

Stayed in double as no cabins available, walls very thin, warm enough. Shared washing facilities and very few mains outlets in the rooms. Convenient access to parking. Don't try to get down the the riverbed nearby as access is over boulders.

Room tip: The cabins look far better, take ear plugs if you stay in the normal rooms and don't want to hear other people snoring.

We spent one night at the Milford Sound Lodge on a recent 2-week trip to Queenstown. We decided to overnight in Milford because we were traveling with young children and didn't want to make the 10-hour roundtrip drive in one day.

We had 4 of the cabins with the shared bath facilities. The rooms themselves are totally basic, essentially almost like half a shipping container with a window on one end and a window/door on the other. Still, all of them were very clean with plenty of space for our overnight bags. The beds were fairly comfortable as well. Even though the daytime temperatures had been quite high, the rooms cooled down quickly at night with the windows opened. You do have to keep your door shut, however, because the sand flies are a terrible problem all day.

The shared bathroom facilities were fine, plenty of showers and toilet stalls. While the facilities were not dirty or unclean, the ladies bathroom at least had an unpleasant odor, so we got in and out of there as quickly as possible. The bathrooms definitely could use better ventilation.

I can't speak for the rest of the facilities, as we didn't really use them. The location is very convenient to the pier from which the cruises leave. We would consider staying here again for an overnight trip to Milford.

Hi, thank you for posting. Very wise not to endure the 10 hour drive to Milford Sound and back from Queenstown. It also means you have very little time to really enjoy Milford Sound and the stunning scenic drive in and out. The cabins you stayed in are very basic, but also very affordable at $75 a night and we will look into your comment regarding the womens bathrooms, thanks for letting us know. Regards, the Lodge Team.
