This was the highlight of my NZ holiday. Sea lions posing on the beach a few metres away, yellow eyed penguins coming in from the sea, fur seal pups and mothers calling on the rocks and sooty albatross flying above. And all seen within an incredible landscape.
We did a tour with Elm Wildlife in August and loved it. Our guides, Sean and Tony, were friendly and knowledgeable, passing on lots of information that we wouldn't have had access to had we just visited the area on our own. We had brilliant, close up encounters with yellow-eyed penguins and NZ sea lions at their private reserve where we were the only visitors - definitely worth the money to see the wildlife there which no-one else can access. Also saw fur seals - further away, though still great views - and albatross. Would definitely recommend.
We had an excellent time! My partner and I were picked up from our accommodation on the Otago Peninsular and taken down to the headland. Despite cold and rainy weather it was still a fantastic experience. We saw lion seals, fur seals, yellow eyed penguins and albatrosses :) Shane was a great guide with a wealth of knowledge and experience. This tour is fantastic as they work with the farmland owners to maintain the conservation area and protect the wildlife. Very happy we were able to see the wildlife up close in the wild and learn a thing or two as well.
The Encounters Tour was an up close and personal tour where we could see fur seals, penguins, sea lions and various species of birds. Really an amazing sight to see the animals at such close range. the tour guide was knowledgeable and shared many valuable information with us. However, not suitable for those who are not able to climb up steep slopes as we had to walk down and up 2 steep hills to see the animals. Nonetheless, it was truly an amazing experience!
I visited in mid June, and was looking for a good way to see the highlights of the peninsula on my day off while my friend was studying for her exams. What a great choice this was! The tour guides (I feel horrible that I can't remember their names!) were friendly, personable, and extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife on the peninsula. You can tell that they really enjoy what they do, and are not by any means tired of showing people around. A huge highlight was seeing a whale jumping in the water while we were looking at the seals - both guides mentioned that it was a first for them, so it was a very cool experience for all of us. We also got a good look at the "stars" of the tour, despite the weather not being super optimal for all of them: sea lions, seals, albatrosses, blue eyed penguins, and yellow eyed penguins, as well as a handful of other species of birds and other small animals. Pick up/ drop off is super easy, and they do their best to try and accommodate you. I left from the Dunedin iSite in the city centre and it was a breeze. Even on a cold winter day, it was well worth it! Thanks, Elm Wildlife Tours!
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience of seeing penguins and seals in their natural habitat. Also the opportunity to see Albatrosses both in flight and their young in the nests. The guides were excellent and they had a nice way of passing on their knowledge to the customers. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable day which I would recommend to anyone.
