We took our friends from New Yorks State to Aramoana on a lovely hot summers day. As we pulled up to the edge of the car park at the end nearest the Mole a seal was swimming in towards the shore, pulled itself up onto the rocks beside the car park and looked as if it was posing for the photos they took. What luck! Then we walked along the Mole and saw other seals along the way. There were only a few other people at Aramoana while we were there but it wasn't over crowded by any means.
The night before we went I showed them the video 'Out of the Blue' about the man who went on the rampage (several years ago now) He killed about thirteen people in this small seaside settlement. When at Aramoana we were able to show them the memorial to those killed which is located just through from the car park.
We had taken a picnic lunch and went around to the surf beach where we sat on an old log to eat. They loved the walk along the beach with all the shells in the sand. They enjoyed being able to paddle in the water, take photos with the rock formations as the back drop and see a man sitting at the top of an extremely high sand dune. They even got a slight sunburn even though they had worn sunscreen. The whole atmosphere of the area was really peaceful. They live about four hours from the sea in the USA and found Aramoana amazing. It is so good to show visitors our special places and see it again through their eyes.
