We took the early train through some of the most beautiful mountain gorges we have ever seen. Bring your camera.

Hi there 58randyt,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your journey and the beautiful, everchaging scenery. You are right in saying bring your camera, there are some great photo opportunities along the way!

Maybe next time you are in town you would be interested in going on one of our other journeys, such as the Seasider.

Cheers,

It is a scenic rail trip. It is pricey. I was glad to have bought our tickets at a discounted rate. The rail personnel are friendly and the tour is informative. The journey is comfortable. The carriage cafe is good. Great flat whites!

Hi there Sonia,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

We are glad to hear you found our live commentary informative and enjoyed the coffee from our buffet. Our staff do a great job on board.

Perhaps next time you are in town you might enjoy the Seasider - this is a 2 hour return journey, which is a lower cost option and travels along the beautiful Otago Coast.

Thanks again,

Natasha Cameron

We had an awesome trip up on the train to Pukerangi and back on the last day of Autumn. The weather was good , the sun came out and the landscape was stunning. We were in the vintage carriage and the heating was very good. I had rugged up a bit for the trip but my layers were discarded in the luggage rack. Even standing out on the viewing platform with my camera, my thin merino kept me warm. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food in the buffet car was very good. There were lots of tunnels to go through quite a lot of bridges but the Viaduct was stunning. The landscape varied greatly from inner city, industrial areas, pastoral, hilly, forestry then the river, the gorges, the rock, the schist, the climbs and then the pastoral rolling hills of the farmland near Pukerangi. The train stopped at Hindon for a short time so we all got off and wandered around for about 5 minutes. There was some down time in Pukerangi when the locomotives were uncoupled and they traversed down the other line to back up and hook up on to train again. The trip back down was a chance to snap some images that I could not get on the way up. Also it was a time to relax and enjoy the ride with a little bottle of bubbles , a beer and a few chippies. A great afternoon was enjoyed by the both of us and we would highly recommend the experience.

We enjoyed a great trip up to Pukerangi on a beautiful late-autumn afternoon - we were blessed with lovely weather, and the scenery with autumnal colours and long shadows was gorgeous.
We were lucky our tickets seated us in the older carriage with a nice vintage vibe.
It's quite a sedate gentle journey, the train goes quite slow at points especially across the original amazing viaducts, but this is all part of the pleasure and helps ease you into the joys of train travel and take in the views. The trip did take 30 minutes longer as mentioned on the website.
The engineering feats are extraordinary and the geology astounding. You feel rather small and insignificant looking at the slips and flood damage and in awe of nature.
The trip commentary was great - more is said on the way up with some extra info thrown in on the return. It all feels fresh even though it's probably a standard blurb, and quite funny at times. I did notice we weren't told where the buffet car or toilets were located, and it would be helpful if people were asked at the beginning of the trip to share the viewing platforms. They are very small spaces and you have to be quick to get photos.
We took our own lunch, but most other people visited the buffet car and their purchases looked excellent. The prices seemed reasonable.
Highly recommend the Taieri Gorge trip, and also treating yourself to a meal at Cobb & Co at the Dunedin railway station when you get back!
