Thank you for a great day in Dunedin. I was surprised to see the tour operating with myself being the only customer and can´t praise back to Nature Tours enough for doing this.
This tour was so different from most tours, feeling more like a friend taking you around showing his beatuiful home town / area with still giving you all the information you expect from a professional guide. I tremendously enjoyed my day seeing the wildlife and scenery, while getting a lot of information about NZ and the life in NZ as well.
The lunch you will get is not to be missed.
Thank you for an unforgettable day in Dunedin.

“Excellent tour of the Otago Peninsula”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 February 2011

In Dunedin, we went on a most amazing tour with Back to Nature Tours – it was definitely the most memorable of our entire trip.
Emma was our wonderful guide. We started off at the old Dunedin Railway Station – a gorgeous building from the 1800’s which is still functional.
From there, we headed over to Larnach Castle. We were thrilled with the beauty and the great variety of plants and got some amazing photos of the harbour from the top of the hill.
We then headed out on an incredibly scenic tour along the Otago Peninsula. We arrived at Penguin Place, had a short presentation by the guide there, and then donned our raincoats and actually walked through covered trenches and hides out into the wild.
We saw the yellow-eyed penguins, one of the rarest types in the world, very close up (we were so close to them one gentlemen actually got pooped on), and this was a rare chance to see them up close in their natural habitat. We also saw several seals on the beach, and all the while the guide was explaining to us the significance of what we were seeing.
We had been advised in advance to wear some warm clothing and good walking shoes, and I definitely appreciated both on that day.
From there we stopped for lunch (included) at a pub, by the waterfront. And then we were off to the Albatross Centre. Some folks opted to go on the Albatross tour of the nesting area while others stayed outside and spotted several albatross flying freely overhead and watched the seals.
On our final leg of the tour, Emma drove through the downtown part of Dunedin. And then we were at Baldwin Street which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as “the steepest street in the world”.
Overall we had an excellent day and an excellent tour guide.

“If we could do it again -- we would”

Our HAL cruise ship stopped in Dunedin while on our 14 night tour of New Zealand. We contacted Chris by email several months before our arrival to book a reservation. It was effortless. On our arrival, we were promptly met at our ship for our full day tour. There was another ship in port that day, so our itinerary was arranged so we would not coincide with the ship's excursions. We had a fabulous day with our guide Len. We had some periods of heavy rains and then sunshine, but Len made sure that we all stayed dry. Our tour included the Penguin Colony, the Albatross Colony, the Railway Station, the city center, a delicious lunch, and much more. New Zealand is a beautiful country, but Dunedin had some of the most stunning countryside.

“Absolutely Fabulous!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 December 2009

We visited Dunedin Nov 10 while cruising on the MS Amsterdam. I corresponded with Chris Roberts there prior to the cruise and set up a private tour for 18 people from the ship. We did a tour of the city first thing before traffic got bad, and where able to really see the wonderful Art Deco styling of the buildings and included a stop at their famous railroad station. From there we were off to the Larnach Castle where we toured the gardens and some took advantage of touring inside for an optional fee. After that we went around the country side as we made our way to a wonderful tiny local pub for lunch which was included in the price of the tour. The Speights beer was the best but is extra! Try the dark, it's almost like Guinness!!

From there it was off to Taiaroa Head where the Northern Albatross nest.. We only saw one flying but what a magnificent bird! Then it was off to the best part of the tour, the Yellow Eyed Penguin Refuge. We were fortunate in that a lot of eggs had hatched recently and we were able to see adults in the nests with baby's tucked under their feet!!

Chris provided excellent comments throughout the tour, and ensured that all of us had a fantastic time! We highly recommend Back to Nature Tours if you are ever in the Dunedin area!!
