Courtesy Court Motel

Our stay in Christchurch was something of a last minute plan, and with the problems stemming with the earthquake, we were a little uncertain as to where to stay. We were touring New Zealand by bus, so we wanted someplace close to the bus stop because we didn’t want to cover great distances by foot with our luggage. The Courtesy Court Motel fit the bill as it was only a couple of blocks from the Intercity Bus Stop, which is currently located on Bealey Street. Christchurch had just experienced a rather significant snow storm a day or two before our arrival, so it was doubly well that we chose a motel close to the bus stop. The walkways were all still very icy and hard to manage.

The motel’s rooms are split between three buildings and are both ground level and one flight up. There are no lifts, at least not in the building we were in, so be prepared to climb steps (not a problem for us). We had a king bed room with amply supplied kitchenette. The bed was comfortable, and the room was maintained in a very clean condition. We found a few lights not working in the room when we arrived, and we told reception about them the next morning. One was fixed quickly, but the other would require an electrician, so it could not be repaired in the short time that we were there. This was not a huge problem for us, so we weren’t perturbed by it.

We used the Guest Laundry facility where we found that the washing machine was free to use, but there was a charge for use of the dryer. This also did not present a problem; it was pleasant to be able to use the washer as part of our room charge. Our stay was short, but we felt we got good value for the bargain.

The Internet service was free and unlimited.

There was a mixup with the booking. We wanted a room with 2 beds but got a room with 1. He changed it for us for an additional fee which was very reasonable. Free wifi for which he gave us the password. So far so good.

Unfortunately upon arrival at the room, the comforter on the bed was dirty. There was a stain of some sort. I asked if he could change it and he didn't seem too troubled by it. Later, I realized that the other blanket was also dirty, with another stain. At this point I started to get frustrated and asked if he could change that one too, but he wouldn't! His excuse was that that blanket doesn't actually touch my body so it doesn't matter. Umm, excuse me? If I'm paying for a room I want clean bedding. Hostels that charge $30 a bed give you cleaner bedding than this, what's up with that? I tried to reason with him but he was very stubborn and thick-headed and would not change the bedding. He said if we weren't happy with the motel that we should leave and he wouldn't charge us. I said that that wasn't necessary, and that we could stay if he'd just change the bedding, saying it wasn't unreasonable to request clean bedding if there are clearly visible stains that looked like someone ate a hot dog with lots of ketchup followed by yoghurt for dessert all in that bed.... Which I'm sure that's NOT what it was.....

Anyways, disgusting place. We left, got a hand-written confirmation in case he tried to charge us after all (because people can be sneaky). Upon arrival back home we got an email saying that he marked us as a no-show and we were charged the fee! Sneaky. After harassing the hotel and the booking site we're informed that he "accidentally" checked that. We didn't see a charge at all.

We tried to lock the door when leaving but the door wouldn't lock and they was jammed in the lock. Glad we didn't stay here as I'm sure it'd be easy to break in with a broken door knob (or if we can't take the key out of the lock)..

Upon leaving we used his wifi from our own device to find another hotel. Luckily we hit up TripAdvisor and found all the information we needed to find a decent hotel before he changed the wifi password on us! That's right, he gave us the password, and then changed the password, affecting all the guests using the internet, JUST to prevent us from using his wifi and finding another hotel! That's so malicious and evil. Who does that?!

This place is super ghetto. Broken door lock and filthy bedding that the owner REFUSED to change (the second piece). He seemed very offended that I found his motel dirty... Well if it wasn't so dirty I wouldn't have found it dirty! So disgusting, DO NOT STAY HERE! Owner doesn't care about the comfort of his guests and is not courteous in the least bit. Unless you don't mind sleeping on nasty stained bedding but paying should-be-clean-bedding prices then sure by all means go here. It made me want to hurl though. Spend your hard earned money at another hotel. Centre Point on Colombo is where we headed after this horrible let-down and that place was awesome. Go there.

Room Tip: bedding is probably dirty

My husband and I, with our 2 sons, stayed in a 2-bedroom unit during our NZ vacation. The unit is very well maintained and we were delighted with the fully equipped kitchen. The location is great too, very near the city centre and amenities like supermarket.
It was our first stopover in South Island from Auckland, before we did a self-drive in South Island itself. We liked the motel so much that we decided to again spend a night there before our return back to Auckland.

Our school group stayed at the Courtesy Court Motel as part of a two-week self-booked trip to Australia and New Zealand. This particular hotel got one of the best ratings from our students for any hotel on our trip!
The rooms are modern, spotlessly clean, comfortable, and quiet, and the price was pretty reasonable. There is plenty of parking, and the location is convenient. The manager was helpful and eager to help with directions. This place definitely rates a "thumbs up."
