People drive and cycle up here. The views are fantastic. There are plenty of trails for mountain bikes and some separate trails for walkers. Nonetheless keep an ear & eye open for mountain bikers as they do sometimes whizz along.

If you get there early it is a bit quieter as by 09:30/10:00 it starts to become more popular after that.

The port hills are a fantastic place for a wide range of activities, they were my second home when I lived in Christchurch and i still venture up there when I'm in Christchurch and get the chance

I walked one of the tracks from Lyttelton up to Summit Road and the Christchurch Gondola and it was amazing. Really nice walk, not too difficult (I was in jeans and Vans) and the views all the way up were just incredible of both Lyttelton/Banks Peninsula and the whole of Christchurch and beyond to the Southern Alps.

A great variety of tracks for walkers of all ages, runners and mountain bikers. There's the Victoria Park playground, heaps of great picnic areas and the views are amazing. It's worth gong for an hour or a whole day.

Great views of the city, plains and Sumner. Some great walks too. Don't like walking, take the gondola.

Amazing 360* views. Walked part of the Banks Peninsula Walk with friends followed by a tasty lunch in the Sign of the Kiwi cafe.

This is a lovely easy way to see the lay of the land. The Port Hills enfold Christchurch to the South-East and look back to the Southern Alps across the Canterbury Plains. This is one of Christchurch's many playgrounds, really, a drawcard for cyclists, motorists, walkers, history buffs and plants people. There's heaps to do for all sorts of interest and ability levels. From Victoria Park you could walk the Rapaki Track all the way round to Rapaki, a little settlement on Lytellton Harbour, where there is a marae. You could have tea and tiny cakes at The Sign of The Kiwi on the way. You could go biking on the trails at Mt Vernon or the CHCH Adventure Park off Worsley's Spur. You could cruise around the old hill suburb of Cashmere and admire the early Christchurch domestic architecture - much of it in the Arts and Crafts style and many of them with lovely gardens.

Although the Hills are so close to the city - just follow your nose to the end of Colombo St and there you are! You can get a bus up to Victoria Park - it's really surprising that within a few minutes you can be in wilderness with fabulous views to mountain and sea and (on a good day and in the right spot) not another person anywhere near.
