Owner description: For a “top” experience in Christchurch (15 minute drive from central city), enjoy a relaxing ride to the summit of the Port Hills. Spectacular 360 degree views of the city, Lyttelton Harbour, the majestic Southern Alps and Canterbury Plains. Plenty to see and do - experience the Time Tunnel Ride, go shopping, relax and enjoy a snack or beverage at the Red Rock Cafe.

If there is a blue sky and no rain you have to visit the Gondola - the views are incredible! If you are feeling adventurous, like what we were, you can also walk to the top of the Gondola as there are walking tracks that lead up the hill. The tracks are well marked and well maintained. A reasonable level of fitness is required as it is quite the hike! But well worth it!
The views are spectacular on a fine day, just out of this world!
There is a nice gift shop and restrooms at the Gondola, as well as a café.
We enjoyed having some morning tea there, looking out over the breathtaking vista and then having some lovely photos outside.
The café had a nice range of cabinet food. The services was prompt and friendly. The prices were very reasonable for a tourist attraction.

The gondola ride is a short one but slightly longer than the gondola ride in Queenstown. The view at the summit was spectacular but unfortunately it was rather misty on the day we visited. The wind was surpsingly strong and was really chilly. Visitors can experience the time tunnel ride that will take you through the reconstruction of the history of the region. It was rather interesting although it was just short 10 minutes ride. I would recommend having lunch at the cafe and to enjoy the nice view at the same time otherwise there wasn't a lot to do at the summit. I was hesitating to visit both Christchurch and Queenstown gondola but after visited both, they are both pretty much the same experience except that Queenstown Skyline Gondola has a much bigger area for activities like luge ride and bungy jump with a nice restaurant and a cafe.

We got to the gondola mid-morning. Not crowded at all. Could be because when traveling from downtown on Ferry Rd. , the sign for the right turn to the gondola was not real clear. We went ahead and took the turning but having done so we questioned if we were on the right road, and there were no further signs until several miles along when we actually reached the gondola. A bit more signage would be very helpful. That said the ride and the views from the top of Christchurch and Lyttleton are spectacular. Don't miss this.

We took the shuttle bus from the city which was enjoyable in itself. The gondola ride to the top of the mountain was smooth and took about 20 minutes. Great views of the city on the way up but once you reach the summit the views 360° are spectacular. The Time Travel ride was really enjoyable even for us oldies. The shop at the top had some great gifts at really reasonable prices and the cafe offered delicious meals at reasonable prices. All up, definitely worth doing.

Absolute views from the top. Advise to go first thing in the morning as it was rather busy lunchtime.
