I love Indian food. Whenever I go abroad I always like to find an Indian restaurant to see how it compares with old Blighty. I also like a good Madras heat heading toward hot but not so spiced that it colours the flavour of the ingredients beyond which it is just heat.

Relatives living in NZ had told us that Indian food was heat weak from their experiences. A vindaloo level was barely medium. Armed with this information I chose carefully and went to Tamarind, on the basis of some good word of mouth and a few reviews, specialising in South Indian food from Kerala. I’m pleased to report the food was very good and not as advertised - heat wise - by the rellies.

The restaurant is slightly understated, near the Westfield shopping centre and you could almost miss it driving or walking by as it looks like a shop front but the elephant statues outside help spot it. Pleasant decor, not hugely decorative, works well combined with the background subcontinent music that still allows chat at the table.

We had a selection of starters. Samosa, onion bhaji, lamb sheekh and a really interesting beef dish - beef coconut fry. My lamb was good with a hint of mustard and a spiced strength. The beef was so tender it fell apart, had a great depth of flavour and interestingly, slices of coconut shell. The portions were pretty big, the beef being practically a main course in itself. So far so good on the spice front.

The main courses were a mix. The lamb rogan josh was average, a good colour, but nothing special leading to thoughts of ‘should have chosen something else’. The masala dosa for our vegetarian was full of lentils, almost soup-like, and very filling. The prawn biryani was requested as ‘English hot’. It came hot too, some great colours in the rice and soon had the requestor sniffing and blowing his nose! Pinching a bit, it was really good, a depth of flavour and heat that was consistent. My chicken varathiyathu was great. Asked for hot, it was a good heat, a bit on the sharp side, that kept building the more you ate but never becoming too hot. It was a dry sauce that folded into the rice nicely. My hot family man tried some too and was surprised at the heat, comparing it to his favourably, if a bit sharper.

The portions were large and two of us took food away. Be careful what you choose for starter or best share between two.

Highly recommended from me.

Not your normal Indian, mostly Southern Indian. Ordered the standard Rogan Gosh but even that was different & better than the norm. Others has Dorsa & other different dishes, all excellent quality, great night ( food gets 5 stars). The service was Good, the atmosphere not bad, not great.

Wow! The authentic South Indian taste was evident in every mouthful! This was the overall experience which started with a friendly welcome by staff who showed us to our table and immediately came back with menus and a bottle of water with glasses.
We had already looked at their very informative website, so had already narrowed down the extensive menu. Our waiter on return, helped us with some guidance around meal choice and level of heat. We chose the tandoor platter to share as a starter ... just beautiful! I had never had tandoor fish before, it this was beautifully flaky and flavoursome.
Our mains came out and were all beautifully presented, with accompaniments. My biriyani was spicy with a great deal of flavour and an amazing smell. We followed up with dessert, which was very different to what we expected, but yet again, so very tasty.
Thanks for the great experience, all with fantastic service from the two men who were working front of house.

Having recently returned from holiday in India, and missing the fabulous Indian Cuisine, we decided to try this restaurant for the first time. We were thoroughly delighted by the yummy food we ordered and couldn't fault it. Really lovely owner came and had a chat and they were great at making recommendations. Highly recommend a visit. We will certainly be back.
